Cook County Senior Center events and activities

 The Cook County Senior Center in Grand Marais hosts a variety of events and activities.

Senior Center lunch: Lunch is available at the Senior Center every weekday, Monday through Friday. Reservations must be called in by 9:30 am each day. 

Medicare counseling: Marjori Bottila of the Senior LinkAge Line® will be back on Thursday and Friday, March 8-9, from 8 am to 3:30 pm for individual Medicare counseling. Anyone new to Medicare or who has questions about 2016 changes is welcome to make an appointment. Early registration is recommended.

YMCA classes, events, and announcements

The Cook County Community YMCA, adjacent to the school complex at 105 W 5th Street in Grand Marais, offers a variety of classes and activities.

Free family dayFirst Sunday of each month, 11 am to 5 pm. Activities include open gym time with age-appropriate toys, game room, open kids' club, and swimming.

Parents’ Night OutSecond Saturday of each month, 5-8 pm. Activities are provided for ages 4 months and up. Youth ages 5 and older will go swimming, and the evening will end with a child-friendly movie. Preregistration is required and space is limited.

Birch Grove Community Center events and activities

Birch Grove Community Center in Tofte hosts a variety of activities for all generations in Cook County's West End, including training and education, arts and culture, recreation and leisure, and health and wellness. 

“W.E. FIT"  Open Gym is offered Monday thru Friday  from 9 am to 4 pm, featuring "Fitness on Demand" video library and equipment.

Group Fitness is offered Monday and Wednesday, 10:30 – 11:15 am; Zumba is offered on Friday, 10:30 – 11:15 am.

Weekly senior lunches are offered to seniors and their guests on Wednesdays from 12:00 to 1:00. Reservations are appreciated.

"Pickle ball" is offered on Thursdays from 9 to 11 am, and other times by appointment.

Birch Grove Community Center is located at 9 Good Neighbor Hill Road, west of downtown in Tofte. Regular hours are  Monday  thru Friday 9am – 4pm. Information is available at 663-7977 or bgf@boreal.org, and on the website, www.birchgrovefoundation.org.

 
 

Free flouride well testing

The Oral Health Task Force is offering free fluoride well testing for Cook County and Grand Portage Reservation families that include prenatal mothers, children, and young adults up to 26 years old. Forms and bags for well water collection are available at the Environmental Health Office (Planning and Zoning) at the Cook County Courthouse or the Sawtooth Mountain Clinic. Dog Park volunteers needed

Go Dog North Shore is currently organizing a rotation of volunteers to help clean up the Gunflint Dog Park on a weekly basis. Anyone interested in helping out once or twice a month is asked to call Cathy at 370-9494 or email quinn@boreal.org. Go Dog North Shore appreciates all of the responsible dog owners who clean up after their pets at the park as well as throughout the county.
 

Free help with federal and state tax returns

The AARP Tax Aide Volunteers will again this year help members of the community with their 2015 federal and state individual income tax returns, and their Minnesota property tax and rent refund forms. E-filing is possible in most cases.
 
Tax Aide volunteers will be at the Cook County Community Center in Grand Marais on Tuesdays from 9 am to 3 pm, at the Community Center in Grand Portage on Wednesdays from 9 am to 3 pm, and at Birch Grove Community Center in Tofte on Thursdays from 10:30 am to 2:30 pm.
 
Taxpayers are asked to bring their 2015 tax documents, Social Security cards, photo IDs, and 2014 federal and state tax returns, if they have not been helped by Tax Aide volunteers in previous years.
 
Assistance is give on a first come, first served basis. Taxpayers can also drop off tax documents before work, briefly provide necessary information, and pick up their returns later.

Grand Marais Public Library events and programs

The Grand Marais Public Library hosts a variety of events and programs for families, children, and adults. 

Friday Night Reels: The library hosts a winter film series on Friday evenings, from 6 to 8 pm. Films are intended for adult audiences. For families with children, child care will be available at the YMCA. Those who would like to take advantage of the child care option are asked to sign up with the Y the day before the film, by calling 387-3386, or registering online at www.cookcountyymca.org. Parents will receive a coupon from the library at the movie showing to present when picking their children up. Snacks and beverages will be offered. Films scheduled are:

Music with Briand Morrison: Grand Portage guitarist and singer/songwriter Briand Morrison will perform on Wednesday, February 10, at 6 pm.

Third Wednesday Technology Open House: February 17, 6-8 pm. All who have technology questions are invited to attend. All kinds of technology are included -- computers, cell phones, Apple products, Windows, or whatever. The sessions are unstructured. All skill levels may participate, from beginners to experts. Anyone who can volunteer to assist in any capacity is invited to contact the library directly prior to the event.

Many of the Library's public events are sponsored by the Arrowhead Library System and funded in whole or in part by Minnesota's Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.

The library is located one-half block off Hwy 61 on 1st St and 2nd Ave W in downtown Grand Marais. The library is open on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 10 am to 5 pm; on Wednesdays from 10 am to 8 pm; and on Saturdays from 10 am to 2 pm. The library is closed on Sundays and holidays. Cook County Higher Education classes, events, notices and announcements

Cook County Higher Education in Grand Marais hosts a variety of classes and events. All are at the Higher Ed North Shore Campus at 3rd Street and 3rd Avenue in Grand Marais, unless otherwise noted. Higher Ed also coordinates continuing education programs in the community and partnerships with educational institutions.

Mindful Leadership workshop: Author Inger Andress uses the philosophy she writes about in "Kai-Zen" to explore mindful leadership in the workplace, at a workshop on Tuesday, February 9, from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm. Preregistration is requested.

Basic welding course: Instructor Don Hammer will teach basic welding in a three-day course, Friday-Sunday, February 12-14. The class will be taught in the Industrial Tech room at Cook County High School. Space is limited, and early registration is recommended. 

Cook County Higher Education is located at 3rd Street and 3rd Avenue in Grand Marais. Cook County Historical Society events and offerings

The Cook County Historical Society operates the Cook County Historical Museum at 8 South Broadway in Grand Marais, and the Johnson Heritage Post Art Gallery at 115 Wisconsin Street in Grand Marais, in addition to several historical sites -- including the Chippewa City Church and Bally Blacksmith Shop.

Exhibit: "Music from the Tip o' the Arrowhead" features 100 years of local music. As part of this “growing” exhibit, community members are encouraged to add their own memories and memorabilia to the community music scrapbook, as well as to play a tune on the exhibit’s electric piano.

Museum hours are Fridays from 1 to 4 pm and Saturdays from 10 am to 2 pm. More information is available at 387-2883 or online.

 

Winter programs at Tettegouche State Park

Tettegouche State Park near Silver Bay hosts a variety of naturalist-led programs on weekends during the winter.

Saturday, February 13, 1 - 3:30 pm -- "Snowshoe Hike up the Baptism River." Snowshoes can be borrowed without charge with advance registration.
