Cook County Senior Center, Grand Marais

 The Cook County Senior Center in Grand Marais hosts a variety of events and activities.

Senior Center lunch: Lunch is available at the Senior Center every weekday, Monday through Friday. Reservations must be called in by 9:30 am each day. 

Seeking new recipes: Community members are invited to submit recipes for future menus, including main dishes, salads, and desserts. Recipes can be emailed to or dropped off at the Senior Center.

Arrowhead Transit: Call 800-862-0175 option 8 for transit information and registration. Assistance with problems is available from Bev at 387-2660.

YMCA classes, events, and announcements

Cook County Community YMCA, Grand Marais

The Cook County Community YMCA, adjacent to the school complex at 105 W 5th Street in Grand Marais, offers a variety of classes and activities.

Day pass sale: Members can purchase packages of day passes at a discounted price from November 27 through December 2.

Free family dayFirst Sunday of each month, 11 am to 5 pm. Activities include open gym time with age-appropriate toys, game room, open kids' club, and swimming.

Parents’ Night OutSecond Saturday of each month, 5-8 pm. Activities are provided for ages 4 months and up. Youth ages 5 and older will go swimming, and the evening will end with a child-friendly movie. Preregistration is required and space is limited.

School’s Out Field Trips: On December 7, the Cook County Youth Agency Coalition will host a field trip. Details of each field trip and registration will be available from the Y by phone or on the website. 

New Year’s Eve Youth Lock-In: Thursday, December 31, from 7 pm to 7 am.  All-night activities such as swimming, sports, games, and movies will be available for youth ages 8-15. Registration is required.

Birch Grove Community Center events and activities

Birch Grove Community Center in Tofte hosts a variety of activities for all generations in Cook County's West End, including training and education, arts and culture, recreation and leisure, and health and wellness. 

“W.E. FIT"  Open Gym is offered Monday thru Friday  from 9 am to 4 pm, featuring "Fitness on Demand" video library and equipment.

Group Fitness is offered Monday and Wednesday, 10:30 – 11:15 am; Zumba is offered on Friday, 10:30 – 11:15 am.

Weekly senior lunches are offered to seniors and their guests on Wednesdays from 11:30 to 12:30. Reservations are appreciated.

"Pickle ball" is offered on Thursdays from 9 to 11 am, and other times by appointment.

42nd Annual Community Thanksgiving Dinner

The First Congregational Church in Grand Marais, invites the public to the 42nd Annual Community Thanksgiving Dinner at 1 o’clock Thanksgiving Day. A traditional meal will be served and everyone is welcome. There is no charge and no sermon. Information about home delivery, takeout meals and rides to the dinner is available by phone at 387-2113

North Shore Holiday Weekends

"O Ole Night -- A North Shore Holiday" features special events every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from Thanksgiving weekend through December, in Grand Marais, Lutsen, Tofte, and Schroeder. Several events are scheduled Thanksgiving weekend.


  • Lutsen Mountains Thanksgiving Family Festival weekend features turkey bowling and a holiday concert with the New Standards Friday night, November 27.
  • Saturday evening is the 10th Annual Home for the Holiday Market at Last Chance Gallery in Lutsen, with a bronze pour at 4 pm, tree lighting and caroling at 6 pm. The gallery is open from 10 am to 8 pm.

Grand Marais:

  • Photos can be taken with Santa and his sled dogs at Stone Harbor Wilderness Supply in Grand Marais. 
  • Community parade starts at 4 pm on Friday, down Wisconsin Street and finishing at Harbor Park. Participants are asked to line up in the Senior Center parking lot on Broadway, starting at 3:30 pm -- walkers, jugglers, winter bikes, four-legged furry animals, decorated vehicles, and trailers are all welcome and encouraged. 
  • Tree lighting and carol singing follows the parade.
  • The winner of the Grand Marais mayor's essay context, open to students elementary through high school, will push the button to light the tree.
  • Crafts & Consultants Open House, 10 am -3 pm, Grand Marais Community Center and 4-H Log Cabin, features holiday crafts, Girl Scouts' poinsettia sale, and specialty product consultants.


  • Hovland Holiday Arts Festival, Saturday, November 28, 10 am to 4 pm, at the Hovland Town Hall.


  • Saturday, November 28, is "Shop Local, Small Business Saturday" throughout the county.


Salvation Army bell ringers needed

Grand Marais and Tofte

The Salvation Army Red Kettle Campaign needs volunteer bell ringers in Grand Marais and Tofte. Anyone who can volunteer in Grand Marais is asked to contact Tina Krauz at 387-2700 or Volunteers for the Tofte General Store are asked to contact Polly Erickson at 663-7398. The Salvation Army’s annual Red Kettle campaign helps meet the needs of Cook County residents that are not met by other agencies.

Call for artists to display at Cook County Courthouse

All artists are invited to submit proposals for exhibits in the public spaces of the main floor of the Cook County Courthouse in Grand Marais. Exhibits may be solo or group, but each proposed exhibition must have a unifying theme. Portfolio submissions should include a statement detailing the proposed exhibition (1 page), a resume for each artist included in the proposed exhibit(1 page), and 5 to 10 digital images of proposed pieces. Cook County Historical Society events and offerings

Cook County Historical Museum, 8 So Broadway, Grand Marais

The Cook County Historical Society operates the Cook County Historical Museum at 8 South Broadway in Grand Marais, and the Johnson Heritage Post Art Gallery at 115 Wisconsin Street in Grand Marais, in addition to several historical sites -- including the Chippewa City Church and Bally Blacksmith Shop.

Exhibit: "Music from the Tip o' the Arrowhead" features 100 years of local music. As part of this “growing” exhibit, community members are encouraged to add their own memories and memorabilia to the community music scrapbook, as well as to play a tune on the exhibit’s electric piano.

Museum hours are Fridays from 1 to 4 pm and Saturdays from 10 am to 2 pm. More information is available at 387-2883 or online.


Cook County Food Shelf

First Congregational Church UCC, Grand Marais

The Cook County Food Shelf is open every Monday afternoon from 3 to 5 pm in the lower level of First Congregational Church UCC in Grand Marais. The food shelf also is open the first Wednesday night of each month from 5 to 7 pm. In addition to food for people, the food shelf accepts and distributes food for pets. The food shelf serves as a NAPS program for elders and WIC small bags distribution site. The church is located at 300 West Second Street. 

Community forum: "Brain Development in Young Children"

All are invited to a free community forum on "Brain Development in Young Children," featuring Molly Harney, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Education at the University of Minnesota Duluth, from 6 to 8:30 pm on Monday, November 30, at the Arrowhead Center for the Arts. Dr. Harney will explain in simple-to-understand language the link between children's early experiences (birth to 3rd grade) and lifelong brain development. A light dinner will be provided.
