Guided snowshoe hike

Kurt Mead, naturalist at Tettagouche State Park, is hosting a guided snowshoe hike on the frozen Baptism River on Saturday, January 27th, from 1 to 4 p.m. Loaner snowshoes available on a first come, first served basis. Hike will be canceled if temperatures are lower than minus 15 degrees. Details at 218-353-8809.
 
 

Walking in a Winter Wonderland

Sugarloaf Cove is hosting Walking in a Winter Wonderland Saturday, January 27th, from 5 to 8 p.m. The event is a winter exploration in the moonlight, with a campfire to roast marshmallows and enjoy hot beverages. A short torch-lit hike to the shore is also planned. Details at 218-735-3962. Sugarloaf Cove is located approximately six miles southwest of Schroeder on Highway 61 at mile 73.3.
 

Work assistance for senior adults

Arrowhead Economic Opporturnity Agency (AEOA) is offering a program that provides low-income senior adults job-search assistance and temporary employment. This federal program helps Cook County residents, aged 55 and over, rejoin the workforce by working in their community while receiving on-the-job training. The program also benefits non-profit organizations by providing them a part-time temporary paid worker.  More information is available from Jan Francisco at 218-327-6760.
 

Volunteer drivers needed

Senior Rides Program needs volunteer drivers to provide rides for those 60 and older to out-of-county medical, dental, and eye appointments and to fill transportation needs not met by Arrowhead Transit or friends and relatives. Senior Rides also offers transportation within Cook County for medical appointments, as well as wellness and social activities. Volunteers are reimbursed for mileage and can choose their assignments. PolyMet mining project public comments and meetings

The Minnesota DNR is accepting written comments regarding the draft permit-to-mine for the PolyMet mining project through Tuesday, March 6th.
