Second Annual LeGrand Du Nord

The Second Annual LeGrand Du Nord is Saturday, May 27th in Grand Marais. There are 100 mile and 50 mile courses starting at the Coast Guard Station. Post-race festivities will be held at Voyageur Brewing Company. Registration is required at heck of the north dot com.
 

American Legion Post 413 Memorial Day events

A Memorial Day ceremony will be held on the lawn of the Cook County courthouse at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 29. American Legion Post 413 conducts this ceremony.
Following the service, at about 11:30 a.m.  a luncheon will be held for veterans, friends and family members at Grandma Ray’s in Grand Marais. There is no charge for veterans at the luncheon. 

Free home smoke detectors

The American Red Cross is offering free home smoke detectors to everyone. An ARC volunteer will install new 10-year units in your home. Appointments are available at 612-460-3674, and get a smoke alarm dot org.
 

Servsafe Certification and Refresher classes

Cook County Higher Education offers Servsafe Certification and Refresher classes Tuesday, May 30th at the Higher Ed campus. The instructor is Jay Arrowsmith DeCoux. The full certification course is 8 am to 5:30 pm and the renewal course is 8 am to noon. The training fulfills requirements for Minnesota and local health departments. Type 2 diabetes prevention programs

YMCA in Grand Marais and at Birch Grove Community Center in Tofte

Cook County YMCA is offering year-long type 2 diabetes prevention programs at the YMCA in Grand Marais and at Birch Grove Community Center in Tofte.
 
Programs in both locations begin in June and consist of 16 weekly meetings followed by monthly meetings, and will focus on necessary lifestyle changes, and methods participants can use to maintain their healthy changes.
 
Classes in Grand Marais are Tuesdays, from 5:15 to 6:15 p.m. Registration and informational meeting is Wednesday, May 31st, at the YMCA.
 
Classes in Tofte are Wednesdays, from 10 to 11:00 a.m. Registration and informational meeting is Tuesday, May 30th, at the Birch Grove Community Center.

​Lutsen Mountains Master Development Plan

Lutsen Mountains Master Development Plan expanding recreation services onto adjoining Superior National Forest lands has been accepted by the Forest Service. Expansion plans include winter operations, ski runs, and visitor services. Lutsen Mountains must apply for a Ski Area Special Use Permit before the expansion plans are authorized. Public input meetings are at Pier B Resort in Duluth and at Summit Chalet in Lutsen. Both meetings are Thursday, June 1st, from 10 a.m. to noon. Raffle for medical expenses

A raffle is being held to help defray the medical bills of Russell Klegstad's liver transplant surgery. Tickets can be purchased at Buck’s Hardware, Cook County Home Center, Dairy Queen, Mike’s Holiday, and Super America in Grand Marais. The drawing is Thursday, June 15th.
