Gary grew up on the southwest side of Chicago. He graduated with a B.S. in Geology from Western Illinois University and was promptly exiled to the oilfields of North Texas and Oklahoma. His favorite recollection from that period is a bumper stick which read – “Please don’t tell my mother I work in the oilfield. She still thinks I play piano in a whorehouse.”
In 1986 he and his wife, Mary Ann, escaped to the Twin Cities where he worked in manufacturing management until 1993. At that time they moved to Cook County where he has been variously employed as a technical consultant, graphic designer, technical writer, lodging staff, coffee shop/book store owner, and in other capacities too numerous to mention.
