What is the next step in discussing social capital in Cook County?

WTIP, Cook County Extension and the Grand Marais Public Library on Tuesday, July 7th at 6:30 p.m. in the Social Room at the Cook County Community Center for a 'Dessert Buffet,' coffee, tea and a review of the Cook County social capital survey and the 'Better Together' project. Information gathered from these two projects will be used by participants to discuss and help formulate a plan for advancing social capital in Cook County. Please call

This week on WTIP's First Thursday Community Conversations Program: “This summer in Cook County – Is company coming?”
Tune in Thursday, July 2 from 6-7 pm for a discussion on tourism in Cook County. Four people who know tourism and our all-important visitor industry will be on hand to answer questions and discuss the prospects for the year. In the studio will be Eric Humphrey, Grand Marais Area Tourism Association; Mike Larson, Lutsen-Tofte Tourism Association; Kate Surbaugh with the Cook County Events and Visitor’s Bureau, and Luana Brandt, Gunflint Trail Association. New 'Living on the Edge' airs Thursday at around 8:45 a.m.
“Living on the Edge: Exploring Economic Reality in Cook County” is a year long project that takes a broad look at the economic issues facing our community. Each month WTIP produces a feature story that delves into the challenges we face as a community and as individuals when trying to make ends meet.

This Month's Living on the Edge: Demand for food assistance has surged in Cook County in the last year. Thirty-three percent of the county’s school aged children are on the free and reduced price lunch program. With local unemployment at an 18 year high, organizations that offer assistance with food are increasingly busy.

CPB selects WTIP for national award
WTIP has been selected by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) for a 2009 My Source Community Impact Award for Engagement for the station’s work related to coverage during the Ham Lake Fire. |
WTIP's Director Deb Benedict says it is a great honor to have the station chosen for the national award.
“I’m very pleased to have the station chosen for such a prestigious award. Our focus has always been on serving the community and being a resource to people connected to this region. I am thrilled to have the station’s work recognized on a national level.”
The My Source Community Impact Award For Engagement was created by CPB to give recognition to stations for their commitment and responsiveness to their communities, providing innovative services that have measurable results.

Cook County Conversations
WTIP North Shore Community Radio, Boreal Access and the Cook County News Herald, in partnership with e-democracy.org and the Blandin Foundation have launched Cook County Conversations, an on-line forum for sharing insights and perspective on issues that affect our community. This new forum is a safe, civil and informative platform for residents and visitors of Cook County to discuss issues that affect them.
