Many Cook County taxpayers could see refunds based on preliminary levy

During a meeting of the Cook County Board of Commissioners on Sept. 19, the commissioners voted to set a preliminary, or maximum levy for 2018.

The preliminary levy was set at 19.9 percent. 

This could mean some Cook County taxpayers will receive a “Special Homestead Credit Refund,” which is essentially a refund on property taxes when local taxes are increased significantly in one year.

To qualify for the special refund the net property tax on a homestead must have increased by more than 12 percent from the previous year.
