Transgender Awareness Week is observed annually during the second week of November.

In Minnesota and beyond it is a one-week celebration leading up to the Transgender Day of Remembrance, which this year falls on Monday, Nov. 20. The Day of Remembrance is to recognize those who are victims of violence based on their gender identity.

The purpose of Transgender Awareness Week is to educate about transgender and gender non-conforming people and the issues associated with their transition or identity.

WTIP’s Joe Friedrichs spoke with a North Shore resident who identifies as being transgender. Also participating in the interview is Lindsey Gau from the Violence Prevention Center in Grand Marais.
