North Shore residents prepare for significant snowfall this week

A slow-moving weather system is expected to roll across the WTIP listening area in the middle of the week.

The snow is expected to begin Tuesday after midnight. Snow is expected to fall most of the day Wednesday and Thursday.

By Thursday night, an estimated 12” to 16” is expected along the Highway 61 corridor from Silver Bay to Grand Portage, with localized amounts of more snowfall possible across Cook and Lake counties, according to the National Weather Service.

Travel could be very difficult to impossible Wednesday afternoon and evening, according to the National Weather Service.

Temperatures will remain relatively mild as the snow moves through, meaning there will be heavy, wet snow this week. The overnight low Wednesday in Grand Marais, for example, is 29 degrees.

WTIP’s Mark Abrahamson spoke with National Weather Service Meteorologist Josh Sandstrom in Duluth to get the details on the upcoming snow system. Audio below.
