Isle Royale, the small island laying about 15 miles offshore from Grand Portage, was once home to a thriving community of fishermen and their families, as well as resort and cabin visitors.  Isle Royale has been the summer home for many generations.

Lou Mattson’s parents first came to Tobin’s Harbor in the 1890s. They operated the Mattson fishery for many years and in this interview, Lou recalls his childhood days at the fishery.
