February 10 Gunflint Mail Run canceled due to ongoing lack of snow

With the ongoing lack of snow accumulation across the Northland, the Gunflint Mail Run organizers have officially canceled the annual sled dog race.

The 65-mile race along the Gunflint Trail was initially scheduled for Jan. 6. However, with minimal snow conditions at the start of the new year, organizers postponed the race to Feb. 10.

Gunflint Mail Run organizers hoped the additional four weeks would allow time for winter and additional snow to arrive. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case.

On Saturday, Jan. 27, Gunflint Mail Run organizers held a meeting to discuss the current situation and officially make the call.

“It’s pretty disappointing. We’re bummed out,” Organizer Cathy Quinn told WTIP during an interview on North Shore Morning on Jan. 29. “There just isn’t even enough snow to really even consider it.” Quinn said for the safety of the dogs, mushers, organizers, and volunteers, it was an easy, but tough decision to make.

Quinn said that the mushers need about 18 in. of snow for good racing conditions. Given the existing minimal snow base, current mid-30 degree temperatures, and lack of snow in the forecast, receiving 18 in. in the next 14 days isn’t realistic.

WTIP spoke with Gunflint Mail Run organizer Cathy Quinn at 8:45 a.m. Monday morning on North Shore Morning following the decision. Audio from the interview is below.
