GES students imagine city leadership in ‘Mayor for a Day’ essay contest
What would our cities look like if kids were in charge?
The Cook County fourth, fifth, and sixth graders students of ISD 166 & Great Expectations School (GES) have some interesting ideas and answers to that question.
Students from both schools recently participated in the ‘Mayor for a Day’ essay contest, an annual contest hosted by the League of Minnesota Cities. The students are invited to share how they would make their communities an even better place to live.
As the students began crafting their essays, Grand Marais Mayor Tracy Benson visited the classrooms to field questions about her role in local government and share insights about her position.
The deadline for submissions was Dec. 12, 2023. Winners will be notified in early January and have an opportunity to win $100 and recognition in the Minnesota Cities magazine.
A handful of students from GES shared their essays and thoughts with WTIP about what they would do if they were ‘Mayor for a Day.’ Audio & video of the essays & feature is below.
