Speaking with Grand Portage Tribal Council primary candidates

In February, the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa announced the candidates for its next election to the Tribal Council. Three positions will be on the general election ballot in June 2022. Before then though, a primary election will be held to narrow the race for one of the seats to two candidates.

In accordance with the Minnesota Chippewa Tribe, in the case of two or more candidates filing for the same seat, a primary must be held. That is happening in Grand Portage on Tuesday, April 5.

Three Grand Portage Band members will be on the primary ballot for committee person at large I. Incumbent William “Bill” Myers is running for reelection. Challenging Myers are Donavan Dahmen and Toby Stephens. Interviews with all three candidates can be found below.

Not on the ballot until June is the election for the Tribal Council secretary/treasurer seat. The two Grand Portage Band members running for that seat are incumbent April McCormick and challenger Joan Johnson.

There are also only two candidates for Committeeperson at large II. Running for that seat are Agatha Armstrong and Rob Hull.

The 2022 primary date is April 5. The polls are open at the Old Log Community Building at 58 Upper Road from 8:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.

The election board is also available for absentee voting at the Reservation Tribal Office conference room this week, 12 p.m. – 1 p.m.

The general election for the Grand Portage Band is June 14.
