Updated 5:14 p.m.
Power outages have been reported in isolated areas in the City of Grand Marais amid temperatures reaching negative 20 degrees.
At approximately 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, Jan. 19, Grand Marais residents near Creechville, along Third Ave. W, Croftville Rd, and Hwy 61 near the WTIP station lost power.
WTIP spoke with residents at Harborview Apartments and along Eighth Ave. W where power remained uninterrupted. Reports of residents near the Cook County Courthouse also did not experience a power outage.
At approximately 10:30 a.m., power was restored to residents in Creechville, on Croftville Rd, and along Third Ave. W. However, areas west of town near WTIP remained without power.
WTIP has reached out to city officials for more details on the outage.
At approximately, 11:15 a.m., the City of Grand Marais stated in a Facebook post, the cause of the power outages is due to an “excessive load on the system.”
To assist with restoring power, the city asks Grand Marais residents to limit their power use within reasonable limits, if possible. “Small steps, such as, turning off unnecessary lights and appliances, can help stabilize the system and prevent further outages,” the city wrote in a statement.
City public utility crews are actively working to restore power as quickly as possible. At 11:07 a.m. city crews were reported working west of town, near WTIP.
At 12:58 p.m. residents west of town, including on Fall River Rd remained without power. City officials are working their way in that direction but it will be a while until they can resolve the issue.
