Gales of November expected to return with 40 mph winds and heavy rainfall
The gales of November along the North Shore continue this week with the anticipated arrival of a low-pressure system.
According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, areas along the North Shore, from Duluth to the Canadian Border, may encounter 40 mph winds, 12-foot waves, and over 2 inches of rain.
A gale warning for Grand Marais to Grand Portage is in effect from 4 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 19. The National Weather Service says hazardous waves will be evident and advises the public to keep a safe distance from the surf to avoid being swept in.
The Grand Marais harbor is expected to see waves of approximately 12 feet high on Tuesday morning. In contrast, other areas farther south along the shore of Lake Superior, such as Taconite Harbor, Silver Bay, and Two Harbors, may see 8 to 10-foot waves.
A wind advisory is also in effect from midnight to 4 p.m. Tuesday. The National Weather Service says east winds from 15 to 25 mph are expected, with gusts reaching up to 50 mph. The winds will coincide with 2-3 inches of precipitation.
“It’s going to be a very exciting, blustery, wet day tomorrow,” said Ketzel Levens, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Duluth. “We’ve got (a) pretty powerful low-pressure system that’s going to be moving into the area.”
