The Cook County Sheriff’s Office has had a very busy summer. Each week the sheriff’s office shares a brief report of calls made to the Cook County Law Enforcement Center. WTIP requested more information on a number of the incidents logged by law enforcement dispatchers in July 2020. In addition to these calls, there were dozens of business and residence checks; traffic stops; medical calls; crank or misdialed 911 calls and more.

Look for more law enforcement briefs for August and September soon.

July 1
8:31 a.m. A party called concerned about cars parked at the bottom of County Road 7. They think they might be selling drugs. A deputy checked and it was someone camping on the Superior Hiking Trail.

8:59 a.m. Grand Portage State Park reported graffiti at the Wayside Rest.

10:36 a.m. A deputy was requested for a minor collision on West Highway 61 between a 2016 silver Mazda and a 2017 silver Nissan Rogue.

11:01 a.m. The owner of the former Harbor Light/Wunderbar is seeking entry into the building, but is unable to reach current occupants. Deputies contacted the occupants who said they are out of the building.

11:27 a.m. A party called with concern that an establishment is not following COVID-19 practices. The county attorney will be consulted.

11:41 a.m. Two calls were received about an accident in Lutsen. Callers reported a vehicle flipped on its side in the ditch. See related WTIP story here.

12:15 p.m. A party reported two kids around 12 years old on scooters throwing rocks at a building. The kids were located by Grand Marais Apartments and they said they were not throwing rocks. The deputy advised them that if they were caught thowing rocks, their parents would be contacted.

1:31 p.m. A caller reported a young blond-haired boy riding on a 3-wheeler without a helmet near the courthouse. The sheriff’s office was unable to locate the youth.

6:54 p.m. A party stopped a deputy with questions about abandoned property. The party was advised it is a civil matter.

7:08 p.m. A party called from a medical facility to report that a family member had been putting drugs in their water bottle, which caused them to be in treatment.

9:40 p.m. The sheriff’s office received a report of an adult and two children lost at Judge Magney State Park. The party has cell service, but battery is going. A search effort was initiated. The party called at 10:22 p.m.; they made it out safely.

July 2
4:10 a.m. There was a call of a Peeping Tom on Tait Lake. The reporting party has cameras set up and can share footage. The party is home alone. A deputy reviewed the footage and it appears the figure was actually a bush in the wind and a moth that set off the motion-activated light. No footprints or evidence of someone walking around were observed.

7:29 a.m. A caller reported that a party is hosting illegal camping at a residence on County Road 7. The property owner is advertising it as a camping area but there are no fire pits or toilet facilities. The matter was turned over to Cook County Soil & Water.

9:46 a.m. A kayaker reported seeing a man shoot at a flock of geese, killing at least one. The incident was referred to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.

11:21 a.m. A party said a white motorcross-style motorcycle was parked alongside the road on Devil Track Road all day and overnight. The registered owner was contacted. They ran out of gas and would be coming to get the bike soon.

11:36 a.m. There was a report of a stump on fire at a property on Tom Lake. Colvill and Hovland fire departments, Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and US Forest Service fire crews were paged and responded. Responders were on scene by 12:20 p.m. and Colvill Fire Department was advised to stand down. Water and foam were put on the stump and all responders were clear of the scene by 1:30 p.m.

12:08 p.m. A party approached a deputy at the gas pumps, asking for assistance in going to pick up property at the residence of an ex. The deputy informed the person they can only do so with a court order. The individual will go to the courthouse to get that taken care of.

1:58 p.m. A party called to say cars and semis are speeding in the 30-mph zone on East 5th Street again. The caller said it seems to be getting worse. A deputy monitored the area for a while, recording speeds of 32,26,28,29, and 33.

3:24 p.m. A party with a Project Lifesaver monitoring system was having problems. A deputy responded to calm the person down.

3:49 p.m. Two motorists on West Highway 61 said a vehicle with a trailer has a flat tire. It is partially in the roadway and could cause an accident. The information was given to the State Patrol.

4:21 p.m. A two-vehicle collision of a Toyota Tacoma and a dump truck was reported in Schroeder. Tofte and Schroeder Fire Department and First Responders were paged, along with Silver Bay Ambulance. There are three occupants in the two vehicles and they seem to be okay, just shaken up.

5:10 p.m. A deputy called in as out of squad car to pick up part of a shredded tire on West Highway 61.

6:33 p.m. A party in a maroon Dodge Ram pickup backed into a well post on 8th Avenue

6:47 p.m. A caller reported a black lab in a black Toyota Tacoma with the windows rolled up. The dog looks like it is in distress. The sheriff’s office found the vehicle across the street from Dairy Queen and reported a happy, energetic black lab drinking some water. The dog appears to be in good health.

7:22 p.m. A party reported an angry man that is adamant on camping at Nine Mile Lake. He was told the campground was closed. Nine Mile Lake is in Lake County and the information was shared with them.

7:48 p.m. A party in Grand Marais called to ask for help in deescalating an argument with his wife, who is leaving him.

July 3
12:41 a.m. A party called trying to locate someone, but they needed the city of Cook, not Cook County.

1:04 a.m. There was a call of a man threatening his wife at the donut shop. The sheriff’s office located the parties who were separated and neither appeared to be giving truthful answers. Parties agreed to stay apart from now on. A 41-year-old male was taken into custody.

5:59 a.m. A party requested assistance with traffic control at mile marker 98 as they winch a 2014 black Ford Focus out of the ditch. A deputy provided lights. There was no sign of impairment from the driver, who received a citation for no proof of insurance.

8:11 a.m. There are two or three tents set up on the beach at Paradise Beach. A MN DNR conservation officer was contacted who said kayak camping is allowed, but parking and camping is not. The parties were told they had to leave and did so.

8:59 a.m. Some parties appeared to be camping on the lake on East Highway 61. The deputy located people who were cooking breakfast. They said they were not camping, but were advised they are not allowed to camp there anyway.

9:01 a.m. A party came in to the Law Enforcement Center to talk to someone about their neighbor’s dog attacking their dog. They wanted advice on how to proceed.

9:33 a.m. There was a report of campers on the beach on East Highway 61. The caller said they appreciate that the sheriff’s office and game wardens have been getting campers out of the area.

10:31 a.m. A party called from Grand Marais with concerns about their child who left the house without their cell phone. The parent thinks the child might be on their way to Duluth. A description was given and a bulletin was issued for a juvenile runaway. The youth was later seen in downtown Grand Marais.

11:15 a.m. A party called regarding her son who was hiking the Superior Hiking Trail. He is about 15 miles short of his vehicle, but is very tired and hot. He is looking for local ride services. Phone numbers were given.

11:53 a.m. A motorist reported following a red Blazer on Ball Club Road and it was wandering all over.

12:40 p.m. There was a report of three people fighting in front of Sven & Ole’s Pizza, one possibly has a knife. After the first call, the fight moved to near the Donut Shop. One male was arrested.

1:54 p.m. The sheriff’s office received a 911 call from Grand Portage with screaming on the line, then just shuffling noises. Responders were on scene by 2:18 p.m. There was no emergency, a child made the call.

6:46 p.m. A party in Grand Portage reported missing pain pills.

9:13 p.m. A party called to report a group camping on West Highway 61. It was a family group and they were advised they were on private property and had to leave in the morning. A list of open campgrounds was given.

11:05 p.m. A party called with concerns about a campfire by the Pines by the Stonebridge on Mile Creek Road in Grand Portage. A party was located having a small fire next to the beach. The party was warned of fire danger and told to make sure the fire is completely out before leaving.

July 4
7:59 a.m. The hospital requested a welfare check on an individual who came in saying they had injected something and they were having a bad reaction. The party left before being assessed. The party was located with a family member, who said the person is fine.

9:59 a.m. A party called about someone playing loud patriotic symphony music in downtown Grand Marais. The caller was advised it was someone who had a permit to perform in the park for Independence Day.

11:49 a.m. A party called asking the sheriff’s office to talk to parties at Sydney’s Frozen Custard about loud music.

12:37 p.m. A report came in of illegal camping at Horseshoe Bay in Hovland.

1:22 p.m. The parent of the juvenile reported as a runaway called to report that someone saw the missing child near the bike shop. The juvenile was located and with the parent at 1:33 p.m. The youth was uncooperative and Cook County Public Health will assist.

1:37 p.m. A party asked to wear a mask at the Grand Marais Liquor Store got upset and threatened to shoot someone. The party drove off, but the employee wanted the incident on the record. The sheriff’s office reached the party on the phone and told them they are no longer welcome at the liquor store. The party got defensive and was told they should be thankful they are not in handcuffs going to jail.

8:14 p.m. There was a report of someone trying to get into the dog pound. The sheriff’s office will make extra patrols.

9:37 p.m. A party in Grand Marais said people were blocking the dirt road below the courthouse, being loud and when asked to move they would not. A deputy talked to them, they said they were just trying to watch the fireworks and said they will move for anyone wanting to go through.

9:43 p.m. A party called concerned about fireworks embers getting on a sailboat. Cook County reached the boat owner to let them know of the concern.

July 5
1:22 a.m. A welfare check was requested for a highly intoxicated female laying on the ground near Java Moose. A deputy walked around the coffee shop, the brewery and the beach, but was unable to locate the woman.

8:29 a.m. A party called from Hovland saying that someone had cut down a tree across their property.

9:46 a.m. There was a report of a deer needing to be dispatched on West Highway 61, about a quarter-mile from the golf course. A deputy responded and was unable to locate the deer.

3:34 p.m. A party in Grand Marais called reporting that there were two people on paddle boards without life vests or proper gear for the Big Lake. The information was given to the Coast Guard.

6:22 p.m. A caller reported a huge pile of wood on the beach on East Highway 61. It appears that it will be a large bonfire. The sheriff’s office confirmed with the MN DNR that 3’x3’ foot campfires are allowed. The parties planning the fire were located. They are not lighting the big pile, but burning a few logs at a time. It was determined legal and safe.

7:22 p.m. A party called about some friends that were overdue returning to the Duluth area. They are in a red Toyota Corolla and staying somewhere on the Gunflint Trail. Descriptions of the individuals was given. The party called back at 8 p.m. The group had decided to extend their stay but didn’t have cell service to let anyone know.

9:38 p.m. A motorist in a Nissan Versa reported hitting a deer near the Arrowhead Trail. They have damage to front driver’s side and a damaged headlight. The deer was alive in the ditch, but needed to be dispatched. When the deputy arrived, a person who lives nearby said they went to check on the deer and it popped up and ran into the woods.

8:40 p.m. St. Luke’s Hospital called on behalf of a Grand Marais man who had been admitted to the hospital. He needed someone to check on his cats. Cook County Public Health and Arrowhead Animal Rescue were contacted.

9:33 p.m. An anonymous caller from Grand Portage reported a residence with people coming and going at all hours. They think the party is selling drugs. A deputy monitored the residence for two hours and saw no cars enter or leave.

July 6
2:59 a.m. A caller reported a Minnie Winnie camper in the hospital parking lot in Grand Marais. The sheriff’s office advised the woman camping there that she could not camp there. She was leaving in the morning.

5:30 a.m. There was a report of wires laying on the roadway on Onion River Road. Arrowhead Electric was contacted and they said the lines belong to CenturyLink. CenturyLink was contacted and said they would inspect the site as soon as possible. At 8:20 a.m., CenturyLink informed the county that the lines had been moved.

8:45 a.m. There was a report of a phone outage in the Seagull Lake area. The outage appeared to be widespread and emergency responders were paged to stand by at the Gunflint Fire Halls in case of emergencies. The public is advised to go to the fire halls if 911 service is not available, as emergency workers have contact with law enforcement via radio. CenturyLink called to say they were still working to repair the issue at 5:44 p.m. and 8 p.m. At 9 p.m., CenturyLink conducted a phone test and service was still out. Service was restored at 3:21 p.m. on July 7.

9:00 a.m. A party called to report a campaign sign for a commissioner had been stolen from her yard two days ago. Now a Black Lives Matter sign was stolen. They ordered a new sign, but wanted the theft on record.

10:12 a.m. Complaints were received about a party in a Buick LaSabre been hanging around the laundromat, sleeping in the car and using the laundromat to brush his teeth and bothering customers. The party was gone on arrival. The owners are okay with the man being there if he was doing laundry.

10:46 a.m. A party in Grand Marais wanted to report that an ex is planning to kill him. They feel the ex should have their concealed weapons permit revoked.

11:07 a.m. A caller in Grand Marais reported two dogs in a red SUV with the windows opened a tiny bit. On arrival, the car was pulling away. No contact was made, but dogs appeared to be fine.

12:33 p.m. The sheriff’s office was informed that Verizon is testing towers.

2:00 p.m. A party asked if a deputy could speak with the logging trucks working in the Pike Lake area. The party thinks they are going too fast and taking up the whole road. Two patrols were conducted and trucks were noted going 35 mph and not taking up the whole road.

2:39 p.m. A party is drunk and belligerent and hostile toward staff at a Grand Marais business. A deputy advised the party to leave and he did so, transported from the scene by a sober friend.

5:35 p.m. There was a report of trees down on the Gunflint Trail north of Okonto.

5:39 p.m. A report came in of a tree hit by lightning on the south side of Flour Lake with no visible flames, but it is smoking. It was raining hard, so the Gunflint Fire Department and a US Forest Service fire crew were able to ensure the fire was extinguished. Responders were clear of the scene by 9:20 p.m.

6:11 p.m. There was a call of ACAB (All cops are bad) sprayed on the back side of a sign on County Road 7. The State dispatch was notified to let MnDOT know about the graffiti.

6:30 p.m. There was a report of a tree down in the westbound lane on East Highway 61.

6:40 p.m. There was a call reporting a green car with a foot hanging out of it on the Gunflint Trail. The caller was informed that the car belongs to a local person. The foot is rubber.

8:24 p.m. A call about trespassing came in from Old Shore Road in Grand Marais.

9:57 p.m. A motorist reported a dead deer in the road on West Highway 61. A deputy moved the carcass off the road.

July 7
3:16 a.m. A call of suspicious activity came in from the Gunflint Trail area after a car alarm went off. A deputy responded and heard no alarm and did not find anything suspicious.

8:54 a.m. A party called to see if there could be more signage in the construction area on West Highway 61 to avoid the pilot car getting hit. The sheriff’s office contacted MnDOT.

9:10 a.m. A party called about a bicyclist riding on the shoulder of the road when there is a bike path parallel to the highway. The caller asked if a deputy could tell them to ride on the bike trail. The call was transferred to the Minnesota State Patrol.

10:03 a.m. A construction crew stopped a deputy to report a vehicle from Illinois that did not yield to the workers in the construction zone near Trout Lake Road on the Gunflint Trail. The vehicle was located and given a warning.

11:33 a.m. A caller reported that a male on a bike wiped out on 8th Avenue and wanted someone to see if he was okay. A deputy checked the area and could not locate a bicyclist.

11:36 a.m. A serious single-vehicle accident occurred in Grand Portage, with a fatality and serious injuries for the occupant. See related WTIP story here.

2:14 p.m. The sheriff’s office provided assistance to a disabled belly dump truck on 5th Street/County Road 7. It is fully blocking the left lane. Traffic was temporarily diverted to 4th Avenue West.

3:44 p.m. A party called from the Devil Track campground reporting that campers were cutting down trees and using them as firewood. The information was shared with the US Forest Service.

5:43 p.m. A silver van without a back license plate keeps swerving and driving various speeds on East Highway 61. The information was shared with deputies and the State Patrol.

9:49 p.m. A party in Lutsen called to report a male party acting confused and possibly needing medical attention. He was staying on the Gunflint Trail, but got bitten by too many bugs and drank too much so wanted to go home. Friends brought him to Tofte to get a room, but the man ended up in Lutsen. He was taken to North Shore Health for medical care.

July 8
7:14 a.m. A caller reported an RV camping in the municipal campground for two days. A deputy advised the party they need to find a new place to park unless they get permission to be there. The camper was moved.

8:33 a.m. A party called from Grand Portage asking for help in contacting a family member who is a patient in St. Luke’s hospital. Cook County contacted the hospital and got the room number and phone number for the party.

2:07 p.m. A visitor called to ask why some restaurants that were open yesterday are closed today. They wanted to know if they should be aware of any COVID-19 breakout. They were advised that local restaurants have limited hours due to new requirements and staffing issues.

2:15 p.m. The sheriff’s office began an investigation of possible elder abuse. They are working with the VA on this matter.

2:50 p.m. A party camping spotted on Horseshoe Lake, in a 24-inch diameter white pine. It was hit by lightning. The reporting party put water on it, but it looks like it could spread. The US Forest Service responded.

7:16 p.m. A veterinarian advised a party to go to the law enforcement center to get hydrogen peroxide for a dog that had eaten chocolate. The party was able to pick up the medicine for the dog

7:56 p.m. A party in Grand Marais called to report a suspicious vehicle in their driveway for the past two nights. They leave when the lights are turned on.

8:10 p.m. A party in Grand Marais said they had received threats from an ex. The party keeps seeing the vehicle belonging to the person who threatened them.

8:22 p.m. A party at Pincushion Mountain reported that another car at the overlook parking lot stopped and a female got out and wanted to fight with the reporting party. The party said the woman seems to be intoxicated or high.

July 9
9:12 a.m. There was a report of trees down on Clearwater Road. The information was shared with the Cook County Highway Department.

9:22 a.m. A deputy stopped to check on a vehicle on the side of the highway with its emergency flashers on. The party was fine, they were just pulled over to make a phone call.

11:04 a.m. A party on the Gunflint Trail asked if the speed trailer could be placed in his area because belly dump trucks are driving too fast. The speed trailer will be set up on the weekend.

1:37 p.m. A manager called to report an agitated guest who refuses to leave a West End restaurant. The party was located at the AmericInn and advised that he was trespassed from Bluefin Bay.

3:06 p.m. A party in Grand Portage reported issues with a neighbor who drives his ATV in a sacred area. The sheriff’s office checked with the Grand Portage National Park, which said someone has been riding an ATV in the picnic area, which is also an archaeological site. They will put up a sign that says “No ATVs.”

3:08 p.m. A West End hotel called to have a party removed from the property. Cook County arranged a room at another lodging establishment in Grand Marais. The party was given a ride there.

3:12 p.m. A construction crew called the sheriff’s office to say they had a dog in the back of one of their trucks. It almost got hit a few times. The registered owner was contacted and will come pick up the dog.

3:36 p.m. A female party called asking for guidance out of Cascade State Park. She and her husband were advised to follow the snowmobile trail down to the parking lot. Cook County checked with them in 15 minutes and they were heading the right way. They are tired, but should make it. The made it to the parking lot by 4:46 p.m. and they were met by the sheriff’s office who took the back to their vehicle. They were tired, but in good health.

4:40 p.m. A party reported a vehicle stopped on the side of the road on County Road 14, cutting up wood.

6:36 p.m. A party reported two motorcycles speeding on West Highway 61.

11:49 p.m. There was a report of an altercation between three females at the Grand Portage Lodge.

July 10
8:42 a.m. A party in Hovland reported receiving a suspicious package from Kazikstan, containing seeds. The sheriff’s office advised that this has been happening around the country and asked the party to bring the package in for inspection. The package was dropped off and inspected and will be destroyed. The Post Master was informed of the incident.

9:10 a.m. A party on the Gunflint Trail called to express concern about speeding belly dump trucks and asked if she could put up a sign that says, “Slow the **** down.” A deputy monitored speed from 4:45 to 5:45 p.m. and the fastest recorded speed for a belly dump truck was 27 miles per hour, so complaint was deemed unfounded. The speed trailer will be set up at the site.

10:56 a.m. A camper came loose from the hitch on the vehicle on Loon Lake Road. The westbound side of the road is blocked. A deputy was unable to locate the vehicle.

11:01 a.m. The Grand Portage Lodge called to say they have video footage for a sheriff’s office investigation.

11:33 a.m. A party reported a guy in a white van parked on 8th Avenue all week, creeping people out. A deputy spoke to the man who has a weakened immune system and wanted to get out of the big city. He stays at a friend’s house at night and hangs out at the Rec Park during the day. The campground manager said they have no problem with the man as long as he is not there after 10 p.m.

12:34 p.m. A party on Gunflint Lake said his friend, who he told to leave and not come back, has come back.

3:21 p.m. A camper parked by Papa Charlie’s on Ski Hill Road has a dog inside that has been barking for three hours. The owner showed up before the sheriff’s office was able to respond.

5:42 p.m. A party from a Grand Marais hotel called to say a party was acting strangely, telling other guests he works there. This is the same individual who was an unwanted party at a Gunflint Lake residence. A deputy spoke to the man telling him he would be kicked out if he doesn’t stay in his room and leave people alone. The party said he understood.

July 11
12:00 a.m. A party called from Lamb’s Campground saying that someone was shining a light into their tent and talking about having a hatchet. The individual seems to be on drugs or drunk. The party left the campsite and is currently parked at the AmericInn in Tofte. A deputy located the party and told them to keep his distance from other campers. The party agreed.

1:46 a.m. A dog owner called to get information on emergency veterinarians as their dog got caught on something and is cut. Cook County gave phone numbers for local vets and for Ely.

9:04 a.m. A Black Lives Matter sign was stolen from private property on Hungry Jack Road.

9:15 a.m. A party reported that a side dump semi came up behind him on Devil Track Road and tried to pass in a no passing zone. The party said the truck driver laid on the horn and tailgated him. The motorist said these truck drivers should have more respect for the people that live here. The deputy patrolled the area for about an hour and observed no violations. The deputy returned at 4:14 p.m. and all side dump trucks were going less than the speed limit.

11:46 a.m. A motorist called with a complaint of traffic control at the west entrance to Croftville.

11:57 a.m. A suspicious male was reported at Clearview in Lutsen.

1:48 p.m. A caller reported a dog in a car with the windows barely down in Grand Marais. The car has Nevada plates and has a kayak on top. A deputy checked on the dog. The vehicle had a fan in the ceiling cooling the interior, but when the deputy put a hand in the van it seemed very hot. The dog seemed okay. While running the license plate, the owner returned and was advised of the complaint.

2:29 p.m. There was a report of people driving a red Oldsmobile Alerao through the grass to park on the beach on West Highway 61.

2:54 p.m. There was a dispute in Grand Portage over accusations about stolen pills.

3:04 p.m. There was a report of an intoxicated person laying on the steps and cursing at people at Aspen Inn in Grand Marais. The party was transported to the hospital and then to Duluth for treatment.

5:46 p.m. A party called to report an injured bird. The party was advised to call Minnesota DNR wildlife.

5:53 p.m. A party called to say his friend is stuck on a snowmobile trail in Grand Portage all night. Cook County contacted the person whose Jeep was stuck and he said he wasn’t lost, but was working to get the vehicle out. North Coast Towing was contacted to assist with the removal. A deputy and conservation officer went to the site where the Jeep was stuck. The driver is trespassed from Grand Portage Reservation Tribal lands for driving his jeep on the snowmobile trail. The party cleaned up the mess and filled in the ruts the best of their ability.

7:51 p.m. There was a report of three tents set up for camping on East Highway 61. The deputy determined they were camping in a legal area. The parties were advised to leave the area as they found it.

9:45 p.m. A caller reported someone was in his driveway with their lights on in Grand Marais. A deputy checked the property and things seemed fine.

10:30 p.m. A party in Lutsen called to report a man in a red car driving on the road all day, acting strangely. The sheriff’s office located a party who was sleeping in his car. The party was coherent and said it was not him on the road earlier. He will be leaving the next day.

10:47 p.m. There was a report of a vehicle on its side in the ditch on West Highway 61, almost ready to roll over. The two occupants were able to exit safely. North Coast Towing was called and the vehicle was strapped down until the tow arrived. The westbound lane was blocked until 11:48 p.m.

July 12
9:50 a.m. A party called with concerns about a baby seagull on the roof . They said it doesn’t look like it can fly. They are afraid it will get hurt if it falls. Cook County advised that that is where the nests are and they will fall down when ready and it won’t hurt them. The party was also advised to stay away from the baby as the mothers are very protective and will poop on him. The caller thanked the dispatcher for the tip and will stay away.

4:31 p.m. A motorist called to report a truck heading westbound on Highway 61 that is swerving all over the road.

4:55 p.m. A caller reported seeing a four-wheeler rolling down the highway onto the shoulder on the east side of Grand Marais. The owner returned in a moment and was reloading the ATV onto his trailer and strapping it down more securely.

6:07 p.m. An apartment caretaker called to report teenagers crawling in and out of windows of a building. Two juvenile females were caught and several others were inside. A deputy inspected the apartment with the caretaker and there were heavy odors of marijuana in the apartment. All of the parties were escorted out and told they are trespassed from the building.

6:15 p.m. Two people flagged down a deputy to report concerns about a person who may be suicidal. The sheriff’s office called and visited places where the person might be and could not find him. It is believed he left for his home state, but the sheriff’s office will keep an eye out for the party.

6:59 p.m. A party called to report a collision in a parking lot in Grand Marais. Insurance information was exchanged.

7:15 p.m. A lodging business called to report a belligerent guest who has broken some things in the lobby and is now knocking things over in the gift shop. The man will be taken to Duluth by a local transportation service. He calmed down while waiting for the ride. The sheriff’s office told the driver to contact them if there were any problems and will check in after dropping him off. Harriet the driver confirmed he had been dropped off in Duluth at 11:59 p.m.

July 13
9:11 a.m. A brown male pitbull mix was found running west on 1st Street. He is friendly. A deputy took the dog to the pound for safekeeping. The owner called in looking for the dog. They paid the fee and took the dog home.

July 14
11:29 a.m. A motorist contacted the sheriff’s office with a request for MnDOT to put up better signage and perhaps flaggers as they were just almost forced off the road by an RV and trailer. The caller was referred to the Minnesota State Patrol.

12:10 p.m. A motorist reported being nearly rear-ended by a semi in construction on the east end of Grand Marais. They said the truck also did not take the truck detour onto County Road 7. The truck was stopped and the driver said he did not see the detour sign. The driver also said he was not close to rear ending the motorist. The Sheriff’s Office contacted MnDOT to check signage for the detour.

2:15 p.m. The Sheriff’s Office received a report of an individual in the wilderness with a broken ankle. A rescue effort involving a float plane was launched. See related WTIP story here.

3:05 p.m. The sheriff’s office received a complaint that GunFlint Tavern was in violation of the city’s sidewalk ordinance with tables and a tent blocking the walkway. A deputy observed that the tent was covering the whole sidewalk with people dining. There did appear to be room for people to walk through. The owner was reminded of the city ordinance and the tent will be adjusted to be in compliance when the rain stops.

4:16 p.m. A party trying to get ahold of Ely law enforcement called the non-emergency line. They were transferred to St. Louis County.

5:37 p.m. A party called to report a gravel truck with a red sleeper cab and yellow trailer “jake braking” by his address. Cook County shared the information with the State Patrol.

6:07 p.m. A party called reporting a 13-year-old who spent the night with a relative without permission. The juvenile is not in danger and is a good kid, but they just want him to follow the rules.

7:18 p.m. A party reported a “grungy looking” male approaching them asking them to buy alcohol for him because he doesn’t have a credit card, only cash. When the party said no, the man got upset and swore at them.

8:10 p.m. A property owner called to report a vehicle making a U-turn on is lawn that dug in about a foot deep. It happened on July 10 and there is no vehicle description. The activity was entered as a matter of record.

11:29 p.m. A party called from the Grand Marais Rec Park reporting two vehicles and 4 or 5 people walking around. A deputy responded and found some people getting their campsite set up.

12:13 p.m. Someone tipped over all the orange cones in the Grand Marais construction site. A deputy picked up the cones.

1:08 p.m. While picking up the cones from the previous call, the deputy observed two people walking with a bike and baby carrier. They abandoned it at the Como Oil parking lot. When asked why, they said the carrier was broken. Because there was no child present, the deputy recorded the bike information as a possible stolen bike.

3:56 p.m. Cook County received a call for assistance in locating a man who was having a mental health crisis. He told his family he was in Cook County, on a dirt road, walking to Canada. He said he was not coming back and they were unsure if that meant he was suicidal. The Sheriff’s Office checked with the man’s grandparents in Lutsen and traveled back roads in the Grand Portage area until hearing from the man’s girlfriend at 6:30 p.m. that he had been located safely.

6:34 p.m. Cook County received several calls about an injured seagull. The call was referred to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.

6:47 p.m. A party called from Big Bear Lodge on the Mid-Gunflint Trail area saying that he has had two “Black Lives Matter” signs stolen and now had photos of two people who tampered with his sign. Their vehicle had a Mary Kay cosmetics sticker on the door. The parties were located and advised not to trespass on the property. See related WTIP story here.

July 15
9:57 a.m. A party on east Highway 61 called to report damage to his property. The party at first thought a partridge had broken a window, but found another broken window with bullet holes. An appointment to meet with a deputy at the property was made.

10:00 a.m. A party called for location of the local food shelf.

10:50 a.m. A party on Hungry Jack Road called to report that people have been parking and dumping waste on his property. Someone has now left a boat there. The registered owner of the boat was found but he sold it over 10 years ago ad cannot recall to whom.

11:56 a.m. A report of an injured seagull came in and was referred to the US Forest Service as seagulls are federally protected birds.

11:58 a.m. A party in Grand Marais called to report vehicles blocking their driveway. A deputy advised people not to block driveways.

12:23 p.m. A caller from Grand Portage said they heard of a dog with a possible broken leg. A deputy found the dog near the PowWow grounds and the dog seemed fine. It was returned to its owner and seemed to be happy.

4:05 p.m. A party from Moose Pond Drive reported that the money box at this location had been damaged.

7:52 p.m. A party called from the hospital asking for assistance in getting their gear from their campsite. They had to abandon it because of an injury. The party was given the name of someone who may be able to help. This is not a service that Cook County Search and Rescue provides.

9:02 p.m. A party called to say large trucks are speeding past their area. The sheriff’s office will continue to monitor and the State Patrol was informed.

10:11 p.m. A call came from a party who thought they saw a “huge, red, ball fall from the sky in Grand Marais.”

July 16
7:37 a.m. A party reported seeing people collecting large buckets of rocks from the beach at the Grand Marais Recreation Park. Party said they did not think this was legal. The sheriff’s office told the party that the property belongs to the city and they should share their concerns there.

9:34 a.m. A party called from Sag Lake Trail complaining of fishing guides in speeding boats. A copy of the wake ordinance for the lake was shared with the outfitters.

9:58 a.m. A follow-up visit was made regarding windows that had been shot out on east Highway 61.

10:59 a.m. A party stopped a deputy to ask if he could ride an ATV on the Sawbill Trail. The party was informed he could and a copy of the county ATV ordinance was shared.

11:22 a.m. A caller reported that a party has been riding a bike every night from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. on a Gunflint Trail Road without giving way to traffic. The party is worried that the bike is hard to see at that time of day because the sun is in motorist’s eyes. They are concerned the person will be injured. Deputies were advised and would patrol the area.

12:01 p.m. A party called because their neighbor had been hospitalized and they were worried about his animals. The sheriff’s office checked with Cook County Public Health. They are aware of the situation and have been assisting with care for the animals.

12:46 p.m. A visitor contacted the sheriff’s office to see if she can camp on the lake at the mouth of the Fall River. Cook County advised that is a designated campsite for kayakers, but not for people parking and walking down. She can go down to spend time by the water and the falls, but not camp there. Se was advised to check the Superior National Forest website for campsite information.

12:51 p.m. A Cook County Highway Department found a safe in the dumpster. They were able to open it and found documents. They wondered if it had been stolen. The sheriff’s office contacted the party, who had scrapped the safe. He will come claim the documents.

12:52 p.m. A party called to ask if he could bow hunt in the city of Grand Marais. He planned to be up behind the water tower. The party was advised to contact the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.

1:30 p.m. A party on West Highway 61 reported a yellow lab going back and forth across Highway 61, coming into her yard and disturbing her dog. Cars have had to stop for the dog. She is worried the dog will get hit. She caught the dog and will wait for the deputy or the owner to come get it. The dog, named Summit was reunited with his owner.

2:08 p.m. The sheriff’s office received a report of speeding cars near Ugly Baby Boats on the Gunflint Trail. A deputy on patrol there stopped to assist a motorist with a flat tire.

2:09 p.m. A report was called in from the West End of a black Range Rover all over Highway 61 and going 20 miles per hour under the speed limit; then 20 over. The call was referred to the State Patrol.

3:39 p.m. A motorist called in looking for help in changing a tire. She tried tow companies and auto repair shops. No one is available to assist. No deputy is in the area, so the call was referred to State Patrol.

4:33 p.m. A call came in from Wisconsin Street in Grand Marais, reporting a kayak flipped over in the water. The party was wearing a life jacket. The US Coast Guard responded and got the party out of the water. The North Shore Health ambulance was paged and assessed the person. There was no medical transport.

4:49 p.m. A caller reported a man wearing light clothing dancing around in the rain and talking to himself. The party is concerned about his mental status and because there has been lightning. A deputy responded and the party was gone. A party known to live in the area was visited and he said he had been dancing in the rain because he was excited because it was finally raining in town. He was advised to stay out of the rain for his safety.

5:08 p.m. The Grand Portage Campground reported a small compact car with Texas plates speeding around the area and disturbing campers. A deputy spoke with the motorist and passenger reminding them to be respectful and to watch how they drive around the campground.

6:32 p.m. A lodge on the Gunflint Trail called to let the sheriff’s office know a party is being taken to the hospital in a private vehicle because of a medical issue.

7:28 a.m. A party in a gray Chevrolet Impala reported hitting a coyote on east Highway 61. There was no damage to her car. The animal was killed.

8:27 p.m. A party called concerned about three German shepherds that keep coming out onto the road. The party is concerned they will bite someone walking or biking by. A deputy visited the dog owner. All three dogs were there and seemed friendly. Owner was advised to keep dogs off the road.

9:16 p.m. A woman in Grand Portage reported that her husband had taken her child without permission. She said he was heading for Rochester. Cook County worked with Olmstead and Mower counties to locate the individual. The party was found in Olmstead County on July 18.

10:16 p.m. The U.S. Port of Entry at Pigeon River called to ask the county to pick up a party with a warrant. The person was taken into custody and jailed.

July 17
12:18 p.m. A party called from Grand Portage saying someone was trying to get into their house. A deputy responded and checked the area.

6:06 a.m. There was a report of a death at home of natural causes. Cavallin Funeral Home made the transport.

11:03 a.m. A party reported a brown/cream Aussie-type dog in her yard on Devil Track Road. The dog left her yard, but wanted to report in case owners are looking for the dog.

2:02 p.m. A welfare check was requested for a family of four who appear to be broken down on the side of the road on east Highway 61. The party called back, they had driven away.

4:41 p.m. There was a report of two dogs inside a black Subaru Outback with Virginia license plates in Grand Marais for at least ½ hour with only the front windows open a little bit. While party was on the phone, the dog owner returned and drove off.

5:44 p.m. A caller reported a suspicious juvenile walking around cars during a baseball game at the school. The teen had a handful of cash and the party wondered if it was taken from a car. The sheriff’s office made this a matter of record in case anyone reports something missing from a vehicle. As of 11 p.m., there were no reports of anything missing.

5:51 p.m. The sheriff’s office received a report of parties that have a protection order on file spending time together and drinking. Deputies were unable to locate the parties, but information was shared with weekend staff.

6:35 p.m. U.S. Customs and Border Protection reported an elderly man with dementia at the port of entry. The family was informed and was on the way to get him, but asked if he could be fed. The border personnel were feeding him.

8:30 p.m. A party on the Gunflint Trail called for their daughter who was on I-35 just south of Duluth and had a tire come off her car. Cook County transferred the car to State Patrol.

8:43 p.m. There was a report of illegal activity at Carlton Peak, with dogs running loose, people using chainsaws, a big tent and many vehicles. A deputy responded and found six vehicles there. He advised the group that they could stay the night but must find a designated camping space the next day.

8:57 p.m. A group of cyclists called to ask about a place to take shelter if the expected storm comes. Cook County shared Grand Marais Rec Park number so they could ask about using the Rec building there.

10:07 p.m. There was a report of unauthorized camping at Clara Lake Campground. A deputy advised the parties they need to leave in the morning.

10:10 p.m. A party asked for permission to camp/park at The Point to spend the night. Cook County said they could not give permission for that and advised the party to go to the Grand Marais Rec Park. A deputy also asked four RVs and campers to move from The Point over to the campground area.

10:57 p.m. A caller on the nonemergency line reported a Grand Marais man yelling at his dog, which is tied up near his garage. The caller said this happens frequently. A deputy parked on the street near the residence, which was dark, and could not hear barking.

7:25 a.m. A party reported a black 2008 Ford Crown Victoria parked at Cutface Creek for four days.

9:38 a.m. A business owner reported a flattened dead seagull in the street in Grand Marais. She asked if someone could remove it. No conservation officers were available at this time. The party was advised that she could remove it if she can.

9:56 a.m. A party called to report a suspicious person at the Marathon station who asked them if they smoked. When the party said no, the person went to Holiday.

10:59 a.m. There was a call of a boat left at the public access on Hungry Jack Lake.

11:23 a.m. A caller reported finding a collie puppy about two miles south of Gunflint Lodge. She checked with nearby owners and no one knew the dog. She has the dog at Trails End campground if someone reports they lost their dog.

11:48 a.m. A party in Grand Marais reported that someone let the air out their tires overnight.

5:23 p.m. Party reported an injured seagull in downtown Grand Marais. They asked someone to come check on the bird. Cook County told caller that game wardens will not interfere, but let nature take its course. Cook County checked with Wildwoods Wildlife Rehab and they are not able to accept any new animals at this time.

6:13 p.m. A party reported people camping in a parking lot near the beach on east Highway 61, partying loudly and making a mess. A deputy spoke with the group there now and advised them they cannot camp there. They were instructed to pick up their trash. The deputy said everyone was cooperative.

7:30 p.m. A caller asked for help locating an 11-year-old who just ran off from a campsite. While on the phone the child was found.

9:33 p.m. A party called to report seeing kids going over the construction barriers when workers are not on site.

July 19
3:40 a.m. The Minneapolis Police Department called for a welfare check on a child that is with his father, camping in Schroeder. Parents have shared custody but mother is concerned. A deputy located the child and father and they seem to be fine.

7:37 a.m. A party called to check on an overdue airplane. The party called back at 7:52, they made contact with the aircraft and it arrived safely at the Cook County Airport.

7:54 a.m. An expected death occurred at home in Grand Marais. A funeral home is handling the matter.

8:16 a.m. A party called to report people camping down by the lake at mile marker 121.

9:34 a.m. A party called from Devil Track Lake to report a raft flipped over in the water. It is unknown if there are people in the water. A fishing boat went to check on it. It was an inflatable swan floater with no people aboard.

12:05 p.m. A call came in with a faint voice and some beeps. Cook County was able to call and a party apologized. There was no emergency.

1:18 p.m. Multiple calls came in reporting that a woman fell into a deep hole at Temperance River—not in the water, but in a spot known as the “Old Wishing Well.” Tofte First Responders and Cook County Search and Rescue responded. The woman suffered an injury to her hand, back and hip. Responders were able to get her out of the hole by 1:30 p.m. She was transported to North Shore Health.

3:23 p.m. A party called to report damage to a vehicle caused by a truck with no tailgate hauling gravel on the Arrowhead Trail.

5:16 p.m. A husky named Stella was spotted running around on Highway 61 near mile marker 101. The party brought the dog to town to Arrowhead Animal Rescue. The owner picked up the husky.

8:45 p.m. A caller said they were concerned about a sailboat on Lake Superior in the high winds. A deputy monitored the sailboat with binoculars. It appears to be moving and there were no signs of distress.

July 20
1:37 a.m. A caller in Grand Marais said a young man dressed entirely in black has been walking around the Beaver House and back and forth on Wisconsin Street. Just seems suspicious. A deputy located the young man heading back to the campground where he is staying with his family.

10:18 a.m. A woman reported being cut off by a blue Subaru heading north on Highway 61. A patrol observed multiple blue Subarus, but none with license plates similar to the one reported and no improper driving behavior was observed.

10:55 a.m. A deputy radioed in with mechanical issues with a squad car. A different vehicle will have to be used while repairs are made.

1 p.m. Several test calls were made from Century Link customers checking to see if their phone was working, per instructions from the company.

2:02 p.m. The Grand Portage Marina reported that someone tried to syphon gas out of a car. This is not the first time this has happened, but it was not reported in the past. The marina would like more patrols and it was added to the routine business checks patrol.

3:13 p.m. A party called with a complaint filled with racial slurs. The person does not need a deputy, just wanted to complain. Cook County dispatch shared the complaint with deputies.

3:41 p.m. A restaurant in Grand Marais reported that a couple left without paying for their meal, a bill of about $40. The party came back at 4:48 and paid for the meal.

3:58 p.m. Two women reported that they met a man on the Briton Peak hiking trail who threatened them with a knife because their dogs were off lease. The man said he would “escort” them off the trail and led them back to their vehicle. The sheriff’s office was unable to locate the man, but has the description and a photo and will be on the lookout for him.

4:04 p.m. A party called asking to speak to a “white deputy” and made racial statements. They asked to speak to the sheriff and became upset when he wasn’t available. The party hung up, but called back at 4:20 and 4:39 p.m. Cook County Public Health was contacted. They are working with the individual. A deputy also spoke with the man, telling him he should not talk that way, but gave him their number to call when he is mad at life. The man agreed to do so.

4:24 p.m. A party reported seeing a couple with kids screaming at each other. The male threw keys at the female. The sheriff’s office was unable to locate the pair.

5:58 p.m. A male party was seen urinating on the side of Gene’s Foods. The man told a deputy that he was waiting for someone who was shopping and just could not wait. He was instructed to go inside to ask about using the restroom next time. He apologized to the manager.

6:16 p.m. A party called to complain that semi with a red cab and yellow trailer was jake braking by his house. The call was transferred to the Minnesota State Patrol.

8:31 p.m. A caller reported a Chevy Silverado pickup blowing large amounts of black smoke. The party believes the vehicle has a switch that allows the vehicle to emit smoke. Deputies were unable to locate any such vehicle.

9:04 p.m. A party called from Lutsen because his son had swallowed a Lego. He was breathing and conscious and they did not need an ambulance, just the phone number for the hospital for advice.

10:53 p.m. A party called asking for contact information for another tow company as the two in the area would not be able to help him for several hours. Party was advised there are no other companies. The party got his vehicle started.

July 21
1:35 a.m. A party called to report a possible suicide attempt in the Boundary Waters. It was determined that the party was not in Cook County and information was passed on to Itasca County.

8:09 a.m. A party asked for help locating the owner of a vehicle that has been parked on their property for several days. A paving company is working on the lot, so they need the car moved. The sheriff’s office left a message for the registered owner and told the property owner it could be towed if it is not moved.

8:35 a.m. A party wanted help finding the person to whom she sold a car, but had received none of the anticipated $300 payment. The car broke down after the sale. The sheriff’s office said since it was a verbal sales agreement, this is a civil matter.

8:42 a.m. There was a complaint of a semi swerving around on Highway 61 near Lutsen. The information was passed to the Minnesota State Patrol.

12:00 p.m. A party called about a party overdue from a Boundary Waters Canoe Area trip. The party was expected to come out at the Kawishiwi entry point, so the information was given to Lake County.

1:40 p.m. A party that recently purchased property on the Pike Lake reported that a woman was harassing him and his family, driving by and flipping them off. A sheriff deputy spoke with the owner of the vehicle that has been driving by and the woman admitted to “flipping him off” once. She said she hadn’t reported the party’s parking and burning violations with his campfire. The property owner was asked to contact the sheriff’s office if there were any future incidents.

2:59 p.m. A motorist called the non-emergency line to ask if a deputy or State Trooper had an air compressor and could assist him. The caller was offered the phone number for local towing companies. He said he would look at other options.

6:24 p.m. A caller reported seeing a man who fit the description of a wanted person. The party was stopped and although he had similar characteristics it was not the person being looked for.

6:50 p.m. A caller complained of a dog barking and a man yelling at a residence in Grand Marais. A deputy visited the home and that person does not have a dog. After listening to the barking, the deputy located the dog and its owner. He was advised to close the window on that side of his residence when the dog was barking or he was yelling at it to be quiet.

7:34 p.m. A small UPS truck swerved to avoid a bar on Gunflint Narrows Road and went into the ditch. He was given the phone numbers for towing companies.

July 22
9:23 a.m. A Century Link technician mad a test call during repair work on the Gunflint Trail.

9:26 a.m. Grand Marais City Hall called to ask that a vehicle be moved from employee parking at city hall. The registered owner was contacted and said they were in the process of finding the keys to move it out of the way. They were not sure why or how it got moved there but they would take care of it.

11:14 a.m. A party on East 5th Street called to complain of speeding on the detour route and asked if the sheriff’s office could put up the speed trailer again. Speeds recorded in that area ranged from 25 to 37 miles per hour.

11:21 a.m. A party brought in an open box of ammunition that they wanted to get rid of. Ammo was disposed.

11:28 a.m. There was a report of a trespassing boat at the Hat Point Marina in Grand Portage. A deputy spoke with the boat owner who said he would move the boat Friday.

1:14 p.m. A party called with questions about fireworks and sparklers.

2:04 p.m. A party on 8th Avenue called to complain about people speeding on the detour route. The Sheriff’s Office said they are actively patrolling the area, but also have a lot of other areas to cover. Speeds recorded ranged from 27 to 36 with one 39 mile per hour speed.

July 23
8:35 a.m. A party came into the law enforcement center with a piece of ammunition he found and asked if the sheriff’s office could dispose of. The sheriff’s office took the ammunition.

10:08 a.m. A motorist picked up a black dog with white hair around it muzzle on County Road 7. The party observed a semi swerving to avoid the dog. The dog was taken to the pound operated by Arrowhead Animal Rescue. The owner was found and paid the $30 fee to claim the dog which had wandered down their driveway.

11:41 a.m. A seasonal resident on the Gunflint Trail asked about legal places to target practice. The party was given some shooting locations.

11:46 a.m. A party in Grand Portage flagged down a deputy to say someone had stolen a drill from outside his house.

12:22 p.m. A party in Grand Portage called to report that a woman was making threats to an ex-boyfriend, saying she has a gun. The woman was found with no gun, but was charged with making terroristic threats. The woman was taken to the hospital for medical issues.

2:59 p.m. A party reported a possible golden lab running across Highway 61. The owner was located and reminded of the city’s leash ordinance.

3:56 p.m. A contractor was called by someone wanting him to do some work for Seth Jeffs, a property owner on Pike Lake Road in Grand Marais and a leader in the polygamist Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The caller said he was not going to do the work, but wanted to let the sheriff’s office know in case this is in violation of any legal action against Jeffs.

5:08 p.m. A hit-and-run was reported in a grocery store parking lot. Witnesses observed a gray car backing into another vehicle. The person took off quickly. There was minor damage to the car that was hit.

9:07 p.m. A party called wanting to know why there were two ambulances and a rescue truck on the Arrowhead Trail. The sheriff’s office informed the caller that the Hovland traffic control team, the STOP team was training in the area.

July 24
1:24 a.m. A pickup drove through Grand Marais backfiring a lot. A deputy stopped vehicle and was told the truck will not backfire if it stays under 30 mph, so the driver will not go over 30 in the city.

8:50 a.m. A party on Hungry Jack Road reported that two boats were left overnight at the Leo Lake landing, tied up to trees.

10:40 a.m. A property manager called the sheriff’s office to report a tenant possibly smoking pot in their apartment. The sheriff’s office would assign K-9 Eddy to do a walkthrough when he is available.

12:15 p.m. A party called with concerns for her sister on a BWCA trip who was supposed to be out on Wednesday. She has done solo trips in the past and rents a canoe from Hungry Jack Outfitters. The sheriff’s office spoke with the outfitter who heard from another party coming out of the BWCA that the woman planned to stay another night. The Forest Service was informed in case they encounter the woman, but it was felt there was no need for Search and Rescue at this time.

12:56 p.m. A party reported a possibly abandoned GMC Sierra on East Deeryard lake Road. The owner was contacted. The vehicle has a flat tire and the spare is flat. The party is getting it repaired and will move the car as soon as possible.

1:53 p.m. A motorist called to report being passed by two pickup trucks in the “no passing zone” on the Gunflint Trail by Pincushion Mountain.

3:30 p.m. There was a report of a lost Chihuahua Papillion mix dog named Ozzy on Caspers Hill Road. The party called back on July 27. The dog is back home.

4:35 p.m. A party made a report of a stolen Adirondack chair off a deck. The approximate value of the chair is $300. The cabin owner wanted the disappearance on record in case there are other incidents.

6:44 p.m. A party in Grand Portage said an individual is posting negative things about her on Facebook, trying to get her arrested. She shared screenshots of the posts. The individual was contacted and will remove the posts.

7:43 p.m. The US Forest Service reported they were following two vehicles down the Gunflint Trail. One of the vehicles is headed to the hospital with someone with a hand injury. The other vehicle was given a warning for speed. That motorist had picked up a dog that had been reported missing.

July 25
2:54 a.m. There was a call of someone sleeping in their vehicle in Grand Marais. The party is on probation with Scott County and a probation condition is no alcohol use. The party was cited for open container.

3:39 a.m. A party was threatening a family member in Grand Portage. The party left when 911 was called. A deputy checked on the reporting party and they were okay.

7:08 a.m. A city staffer reported that someone painted the boulders lining Harbor Park. They would like it on record before cleaning off the paint. The responding deputy said the painting was artistic in nature.

8:34 a.m. A party in Grand Marais called to say his neighbor’s dog ran at his daughter as she was running on the road, scratching at her legs. When a deputy responded, the party said she wasn’t bitten or scratched today, but this is an ongoing problem. The dog owner has been warned in the past. He said he is trying different methods of keeping the dogs home and that they don’t always work. He was told if it keeps happening it will be a public nuisance issue and he could be cited. The dog owner said he will work on it. He said he has asked the reporting party to call when they go for a run and he can make sure the dogs are inside.

9:04 a.m. A report came in of illegal camping on the Honeymoon Trail. The party was told they have to leave.

3:21 p.m. There was a report of an unwanted person at a residence in Grand Marais.

6:15 p.m. A party called concerned about someone who has been drinking heavily and is possibly suicidal. Party was transported to the hospital, but refused to stay.

6:33 p.m. An elderly person needs help with phone problems and asked if her neighbor could help. Cook County contacted the neighbor who was heading over to help.

7:30 p.m. A woman called after receiving an SOS text message from a family member. She asked if the sheriff’s office could do a welfare check. The party called back at 7:38, she was able to reach the family member who hit the emergency button on the phone by accident.

8:04 p.m. A call came in that the party from the earlier welfare check was walking around near the hospital. A family member arrived and tried to get the individual to accept medical care, but he still refused.

8:55 p.m. The Sheriff’s Office got an alert from Carver County to be on the lookout for a party in a black Dodge Ram that has weapons and could be attempting “suicide by cop.” Cell phone information shows the individual is in Lutsen, heading south. The vehicle was located later in Lake County and they took over.

July 26
4:36 a.m. U.S. Customs and Border Protection reported a wrong-turn driver with drugs at the Pigeon River port of entry. The Canadian party, with two others from Quebec, reported the drugs which were purchased legally in Quebec. A deputy seized 6.2 grams of hashish and 6 grams of marijuana and the parties were released.

2:29 p.m. A party in Grand Portage called to report a family member having psychological problems. A deputy arrived and attempted to transport the party to the hospital, but they ran away. When located, the party said they did not want to go to jail. They agreed to transport by private vehicle to the hospital.

3:08 p.m. A party in Grand Marais threatened suicide if their family did not support their efforts to quit drinking.

4:01 p.m. A Minnesota Department of Natural Resources conservation officer called in a report of a car in the ditch on Trout Lake Road in Grand Marais. Cook County Towing was contacted.

4:19 p.m. A party in Grand Portage called with a complaint of a person trespassing on his property. This is an ongoing occurrence. A deputy arrived and transported the person to their residence and told them if they continued, they could be arrested.

5:06 p.m. A party in Grand Portage called to report that a family member on drugs threatened them. A female party was arrested.

5:19 p.m. A party called to report a dead red fox on their lawn in Grand Marais. They would like someone to remove it. The matter was turned over to the Minnesota DNR.

11:22 p.m. A party called to report that his neighbors in Grand Marais were having a loud party. He asked the party to be quiet, but they swore at him and asked him to leave. This has gone on for two nights. A deputy spoke to both parties, asking the partyers to quiet down once it gets dark and asking the reporting party to call law enforcement if the problem continued, instead of approaching the neighbors.

July 27
7:10 a.m. There is a silver tanker truck apparently broken down on the northbound lane at the County Road 7 and County Road 6 intersection. Party is concerned that someone might not see the truck. The truck had orange cones out and by 7:37 was on its way.

8:47 a.m. There was a report of a suspicious individual hanging around the YMCA.

11:27 a.m. The Grand Marais Pharmacy called to report a customer that they are having problems with. The party was informed they are not to contact the pharmacy again. If they do so, they could be charged with harassment.

11:32 a.m. A party brought in some old ammo for disposal.

11:38 a.m. There was a report of a chocolate or black lab running down the Caribou Trail. No Trooper or deputy is available, but they will check the area when they can.

12:16 p.m. A party made reservations with a local B&B, but was uncomfortable because they had a Black Lives Matter sign out front and he didn’t stay. He received a charge on his credit card that he didn’t think he should have to pay. The party was advised this is a civil matter.

12:42 p.m. A party reported that their passport had been defaced.

1:40 p.m. A party on Croftville Road reported a person who pulled up to her lodging facility and called her from the car, claiming to be with the Census. He asked questions that seemed inappropriate and would like the sheriff’s office to know about the encounter. The sheriff’s office contacted the person who told them not to harass him. The sheriff’s office checked with the regional census office and confirmed the person did work for them.

3:35 p.m. A party visiting from Iowa called with questions about riding ATVs in Cook County.

3:37 p.m. A report was made of a domestic disturbance at Caribou Highlands. A couple from Kansas was arguing. The male party was intoxicated. Parties were separated and there were no charges.

5:53 p.m. A caller asked for suggestions on where he can park his boat while he is staying at Shoreline Motel.

6:27 p.m. A party reported a loose dog on east Highway 61. It looked skinny and malnourished. The sheriff’s office was unable to locate the animal.

9:55 p.m. A dog named Missy just escaped from her family, possibly running from Tofte to Grand Marais. The party called bac at 10:05. Missy had returned.

July 28
1:09 a.m. A caller reports someone in the men’s bathroom by the ballfield at the Grand Marais Rec Park, yelling obscenities and banging things. A deputy arrived and found a father and son who had an argument. The father left in an RV and the son will sleep in his vehicle with his dog.

2:11 a.m. A yellow lab was found by sheriff deputies. There is no report of a missing dog so it was taken to the pound. The owner called at 9:26 a.m., she will pay the pound fee to get her dog back.

6:00 a.m. A caller on County Road 7 in Grand Marais requested that a deputy go sit by his neighbor’s residence as someone is revving their engine at 6 a.m. A deputy responded and sat in the area for about 40 minutes and did not hear any engine noise, other than the normal sound of traffic.

8:01 a.m. A dog named Gracie was found on east Highway 61. The party tried to call the number on her tag but there was no answer. They will keep the dog until the owner is found.

10:45 a.m. A party called saying they were lost in the woods last night and they needed help getting back on the trail. Cook County assisted the hiker on getting back on the trail.

12:57 p.m. There was a report of a missing truck and trailer in Grand Portage. The matter was recorded as a vehicle theft.

1:03 p.m. A caller reported a nuisance bear running around Lutsen. The party has arranged for a licensed bear hunter to take care of it; they just wanted the sheriff’s office to know.

4:02 p.m. A call came in about a tire in the roadway on West Highway 61. The call was transferred to Minnesota State Patrol.

4:38 p.m. A party from West Highway 61 called asking to speak to a game warden about a problem bear.

4:50 p.m. A caller reported a tire in the roadway on West Highway 61. The call was transferred to the State Patrol.

4:58 p.m. A motorist complained that a red and white dump truck pulled out in front of them on the Gunflint Trail going very, very, fast. The party caught up with them in construction and got the plate number.

5:36 p.m. Some dogs jumped out of a truck parked downtown. The owner was on hand at 5:45 p.m. and got the dogs secured in the truck.

7:31 p.m. There was a report of a male party hanging around the Grand Portage Lodge. He is not causing any problems, but he has no money and needs help. He came to Grand Portage to meet a girl he met online. A female did come pick up the man.

7:45 p.m. A 77-year-old woman came to the Lodge looking for a room, but it is full. She won’t leave and is causing a disturbance. Cook County Public Health was contacted and they found her a room for the night and arranged transportation for her to Duluth the next day.

7:54 a.m. Two teens stopped a deputy to report some adults who yelled at them and were taking pictures for having their scooters out on The Point. The deputy advised the kids to head home for the night and they agreed and left the area. The adults could not be found.

8:08 p.m. A caller reported a four-door, blue car riding around Grand Marais yelling inappropriate things at people.

July 29
4:45 a.m. A party with a heavy accent called from Canada, asking that the police stop investigating his wife. The matter was turned over to Cook County Public Health.

8:24 a.m. A party reported that they had backed into a car at the Oberg Mountain trailhead parking lot. They didn’t realize it until later. They left insurance information in case someone reported damage to their car.

10:23 a.m. A party requested a welfare check for a family member who has been drinking. A deputy spoke to the individual and they are seeking help through the county.

10:44 a.m. A motorist called to report hitting a fawn outside of the city limits. The call was transferred to the State Patrol.

11:31 a.m. A camper at Devil Track Lake reported a stolen kayak.

2:27 p.m. A party reported the theft of a campaign sign in Grand Marais.

4:12 p.m. A family reported a threat of suicide to the clinic and a welfare check was requested. The individual was transported to the hospital for evaluation.

5:29 p.m. There was a report of an accident in which a vehicle went airborne in Schroeder. There were four people in the vehicle and they were out of the car with no serious injury.

6:02 p.m. A party called to report a blue Subaru speeding and throwing gravel on Linnell Road. The sheriff’s office was unable to find a car matching that description.

7:42 p.m. There was a call from a party in Grand Marais about her neighbor’s dogs charging at her.

8:00 p.m. A caller reported seeing a gray Ford F150 flew through an intersection in Grand Marais. The registered owner was located and advised to slow down.

July 30
2:15 a.m. Someone hit a deer and debris is all over the roadway. A deputy attempted to remove the remains, but it is too large and messy. Cook County was told it would be about two hours before MnDOT could clear the road, so a second deputy assisted with clearing the road.

7:43 a.m. There was a report of someone camping illegally in Grand Portage. The party was asked to leave and did so. Personnel at the Grand Portage National Monument called later saying they had some items the person left behind. They will keep it in their lost and found.

8:42 a.m. A party in Grand Marais called to report that their Black Lives Matter sign had been thrown in the woods three times. The party asked if they could be put on the sheriff’s office check residences list.

July 30
9:57 a.m. A caller reported road kill at Highway 61 mile marker 104. The call was transferred to the State Patrol.

11:12 a.m. A party called to report a fender bender in a parking lot in Grand Marais. They wanted a report for insurance.

12:12 p.m. Cook County was asked to help locate a party who was possibly in Grand Marais with children who are not supposed to be in her custody. Cook County was unable to locate the woman.

2:19 p.m. A caller reported kids rough housing at the dock in Grand Portage. A deputy talked to them, they were just playing.

2:24 p.m. Two calls were received reporting a woman yelling in Grand Marais. A deputy located the woman who was upset about rent and parking issues. Cook County Public Health is working with the woman and were on scene. They asked to be called if there were further problems.

4:18 p.m. A party called from Grand Portage reporting two girls on an ATV doing donuts in the road. A deputy was unable to locate the ATV.

4:38 p.m. A party in Hovland called to report that his sister had stolen his truck. The woman was located with the vehicle and was taken into custody. She appeared to be having medical problems and was taken to the hospital.

5:06 p.m. A party called from the Hovland area reporting harassment.

6:01 p.m. A caller reported that a minivan went into the ditch on West Highway 61. There are no injuries. The call was transferred to State Patrol.

6:36 p.m. A party in Grand Marais reported that their neighbors are screaming at each other. Cook County called the residence and spoke to one of the parties, who seemed fine. He was mowing the lawn.

7:08 p.m. There was a report of a fender bender by Voyageur Brewing. Insurance information was exchanged and a report from the sheriff’s office was requested.

7:53 p.m. A motorist reported a white car from Illinois passed him on the Gunflint Trail near Pincushion going extremely fast.

9:43 p.m. A party called wanting a welfare check on his son with mental health issues. He had gone to the Gunflint Trail to meet a woman from Oklahoma. Cook County checked several possible locations, but was unable to find the man. They will keep an eye out for him.

July 31
6:40 a.m. A party in Grand Marais called to say their neighbor revs ups their engine every morning and their exhaust is too loud. They have talked to the party, but have been unsuccessful. A deputy arrived at the location and observed, but heard no engine revving.

8:22 a.m. A party on the Gunflint Trail reported someone in a white Ford F150 pickup trying to damage his Black Lives Matter sign.

9:03 a.m. A party from Missouri is using the laundry at for personal hygiene reasons and asked for assistance in getting the person to leave. Another employee got the man to leave, so the call was cancelled for now.

9:40 a.m. A party in Grand Marais reported that someone threatened to hit him with a baseball bat and throw him in the lake. He said the person is upset about how he treats his dog. He requested information on getting a restraining order. He was advised he had to go to the court for that.

10:01 a.m. A party in Grand Marais reported an altercation over a Black Lives Matter sign. The person in question claims they left a note on the sign and no threats occurred.

11:18 a.m. Another party in Grand Marais reported that two signs went missing off her property.

2:22 p.m. A report was made of a stolen boat trailer. It is a modified snowmobile trailer, valued at approximately $500.

3:30 p.m. A party called from the Gunflint Trail, reporting that the party in the white truck that was messing with their Black Lives Matter sign and is now driving back and forth by their driveway. A deputy observed the area for a while and multiple white trucks drove by.

3:44 p.m. A motorist called to report almost being hit yesterday. They were advised to call immediately if something like this happens as the sheriff’s office needs to observe a violation to take action.

6:56 p.m. A caller reported that thier white Nissan Ultima rolled from the parking area onto the beach on East Highway 61. A tow was requested.

9:02 p.m. A party reported almost being hit when entering the Gunflint Trail from the Old Ski Hill Road. They said traffic is abundant and people are not paying attention.
