Traveling the Old North Shore – North Shore Shipwreck History, Parts I & II
In this two-part segment of Traveling the Old North Shore, producer Martha Marnocha takes us on a tour of North Shore shipwreck history. In Part I, we learn why Lake Superior is so challenging to navigate. In Part II we hear the harrowing tale of two ships caught in a December storm on the North Shore.
Thanks to Jim Shinners for his contribution to this feature. As an added bit of history, the Mataafa Storm of 1905 is considered by some historians to be the greatest storm to strike Lake Superior and the Great Lakes as far as wind velocity and wave heights. But another extreme weather event, the Great Lakes Storm of 1913 – also known as the “White Hurricane” – was perhaps more significant in terms of lost ships, lives and overall weather conditions.
