Cook County Historical Society celebrates volunteers and 2022 projects

On Oct. 4, the Cook County Historical Society held its 98th annual meeting and volunteer appreciation dinner.

The event was held at the Johnson Heritage Post Art Gallery and received a turnout of nearly 80 people.

In addition to celebrating volunteers and 2022 accomplishments, the event featured speaker Tor Torkildson.

Katie Clark, director of operations at the Cook County Historical Society, said one of her favorite parts of the evening was Torkildson’s presentation. “He just had some great stories.”

Torkildson gave a presentation on Calvin Rutstrum and other notable Hovland area characters. The presentation is a snippet of Torkildson’s upcoming book. Watch Tor Torkildson’s presentation from the event here

During the evening’s event, the historical society also shared successes and projects from 2022.

A handful of projects were celebrated during the event, including the museum’s reinstalled exhibits, transcribed oral history collections, culture crawls, trivia nights, new landscaping, and restoration projects on Bally’s Blacksmith building and the Johnson Heritage Post Art Gallery.

Clark shared that the historical society has numerous projects in the works for 2023. “We just want to invite everyone to come see the sights when they get a chance and tune in on the website and see everything new that we’re adding.”

WTIP’s Kalli Hawkins spoke with Clark to learn more about the event and the successes of the Cook County Historical Society in 2022. Audio from the interview is below.
