Cook County local election results for 2024
The following are the unofficial results of the local elections in Cook County from the Nov. 5 election as compiled by the WTIP news staff.
Cook County Board of Commissioners
Ann Sullivan has defeated Dean Berglund to be the next Cook County Commissioner representing District 4. Sullivan 456 – Berglund 411
The Cook County Commissioner District 2 winner is Garry Gamble with 386 votes. Gamble ran unopposed. County Commissioner Stacey Johnson did not run for reelection.
Grand Marais City Council
Tracy Benson will be the next Grand Marais Mayor. Benson ran unopposed and won the election with 651 votes.
Craig Schulte and Michael Garry were elected to the city council. Both candidates ran unopposed. Schulte received 565 votes. Garry received 446 votes.
William Lovaas was elected to the city council. Lovaas received 594 votes. He was appointed to the council earlier this year after Aaron Carlson resigned from the council. This was a special election to allow Lovaas to finish out Carlson’s term.
ISD 166 School Board
Carrie Jansen will be the next school board member for District 2. Jansen ran unopposed and received 496 votes.
In District 4, Quinn McCloughan ran as a write-in candidate, and the write-in candidate for that district received 160 votes.
Cook County voters passed Question 1 for the approval of the 2024 bond referendum. Question 1 approves a $24,175,000 investment for the school to construct a secured entrance addition, physical education addition, including a single-court gymnasium, and classroom, common area and special education improvements. Yes 1,904 – No 1,649.
Cook County voters did not approve Question 2. No 1,847 – Yes 1,677
Cook County voters did not approve Question 3 No 1,993 – Yes, 1,504
Cook County Hospital District
Milan Schmidt will be the next District 2 Hospital District Board member. Schmidt defeated opponent Douglas Sanders. Schmidt 532 – Sanders 98
Sam Usem will be the next District 4 Hospital District Board member. Usem defeated incumbent Kathryn Olson. Usem 627 – Olson 153
Soil and Water
Gregg Westigard will continue as the District 1 representative. He received 2,430 votes.
Amber Humphreys will remain the District 3 representative after she got 2,482 votes. During the initial candidate filing period for county races no one filed for the District 5 seat.
Cindy Oberg-Hauser filed as a write-in candidate in District 5. A write-in candidate for that race received 189 votes.
State and National
In the State House race for the District 3A seat, Roger Skraba won reelection with 55% of the vote in that race, though, in Cook County Skraba received fewer votes than his main opponent, Harley Droba. Similarly, while in Cook County Jen Schultz received 2,399 votes compared to Pete Stauber’s 1,194 for the U.S. House District 8 seat, Stauber won 58% of the vote across the district.
In the U.S. Senate race, Amy Klobuchar was re-elected for a fourth term with 1,788,794 votes, about 56% of votes cast in that race.
Donald Trump was declared the winner in the presidential race. The vote breakdown for Cook County shows that he received 1,142 votes, compared to the 2,482 votes that went to Kamala Harris. Harris won Minnesota by about 150,000 votes, but was not able to secure the 270 electoral college votes needed to win. Several states have yet to be called as of this writing, though this was expected in the days leading up to the election.
Ballot Measure
This year Minnesota voters also weighed in on a ballot measure that would extend the use of state lottery revenue for the Environment and Natural Resources Fund through 2050. That measure received overwhelming support, with 84% of voters voting “yes.”
