Female backpacker dies while hiking at Isle Royale National Park
A female backpacker died on Monday, August 12, while hiking near Lake LeSage at Isle Royale National Park.
The 37-year-old woman from Battle Creek, MI, was hiking with her partner when she experienced sudden onset medical complications. Isle Royale National Park Service officials said in a press release, “As her condition deteriorated, she was eventually unable to walk, lost consciousness, and stopped breathing.”
Officials said CPR was provided to the female backpacker but attempts to resuscitate her were unsuccessful.
Fellow nearby backpackers were able to contact Michigan State Police through a delayed 911 text, which was then relayed to a National Park Service dispatch center. Park rangers and EMTs were then able to locate the party. Lake LeSage is located approximately 3.5 miles northeast of Siskiwit Lake and south of Chickenbone Lake.
Early Tuesday morning, a crew of Isle Royale staff responded to transport the party from the remote location. An investigation is ongoing.
“The Isle Royale community extends their sincere condolences to the family and friends of the deceased,” the press release said.
