Forest Service takes over grooming at Bally Creek Ski Trails

For many in Cook County, the Bally Creek Nordic Ski Trail is a favorite place to recreate in the winter months.

While Dave Williams has maintained the trails for numerous decades, the U.S. Forest Service announced they would take over the grooming and trail maintenance this winter.

“I wanted to say thanks to Dave Williams and his family for the many years of blood and sweat that they put into that system to maintain and groom,” said Jonathan Benson, assistant district ranger for recreation and wilderness with the Superior National Forest.

Benson added, “We know how important the trail system is to the local community and many of the local visitors and residents. So our hope is to maintain or enhance what Dave has been doing for all of these years.”

The Forest Service said they are assessing the current trail system and user needs for future management considerations, including allowing dogs and fat tire bikes. Visitors can submit a comment regarding the trail system in the comment box in the parking area accessed along FS 158.

“Skiing is primary. There are already some opportunities for skijoring and some dog use there,” Benson added. “We’re just looking to see what folks would like to see out there.”

WTIP’s Mark Abrahamson spoke with Jonathan Benson, assistant district ranger for recreation and wilderness with the Superior National Forest about the change at Bally Creek Ski Trails. The audio from the interview is below.
