Former Forest Service ranger Aaron Kania announces run for Minnesota House District 3A

Aaron Kania, the former U.S. Forest Service District Ranger for the Kawishiwi District in Ely, announced his bid for the Minnesota House District 3A seat on Tuesday.

Kania, a Lake Vermilion resident, recently retired from the Forest Service after 5 years of service. During his tenure as District Ranger, Kania was instrumental in managing the 2021 Greenwood Fire and the 2025 Brimson Complex, and in leading frontline efforts during the 2024 flood events.

Prior to his time with the Forest Service, Kania spent over 20 years as a law enforcement officer in Utah and Wyoming.

“After serving the public for nearly three decades, I’ve realized there is always more to be done,” said Kania. “Our rural communities face unique challenges that require a leader who understands our land, our economy, and our people. My background has prepared me to be the voice we need to tackle these challenges together.”

District 3A is the largest House district in Minnesota, stretching from International Falls to Grand Portage. The district encompasses Cook, Koochiching, and northern St. Louis County. The district also includes the Grand Portage Reservation, Bois Forte Reservation, and parts of Lake and Itasca Counties.

Kania will seek the DFL endorsement for the District 3A seat.

The District 3A seat is currently held by Rep. Roger Skraba (R).
