Grand Portage primary election results announced
The Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa held its primary election on Tuesday, April 5 to reduce the number of candidates for the Tribal Council committee person at large 1 seat from three to two. Three band members ran for the seat, Donavan Dahmen, William “Bill” Myers, and Toby Stephens.
Advancing to the June 14 general election are Bill Myers and Toby Stephens.
In votes cast at the Community Log Building in Grand Portage, Stephens received the most votes with 49. Dahmen followed with 36 and Myers with 24. However, Myers received a large majority of absentee votes, with 70, followed by Stephens with 20 and Dahmen with 8.
The primary is held in accordance with the Minnesota Chippewa Tribe. The results are as tallied after the polls closed at 8 p.m. and are not final until certification on April 7.
There will be two more positions on the June ballot, for secretary/treasurer and committee person at large II. The two Grand Portage Band members running for secretary/treasurer are incumbent April McCormick and challenger Joan Johnson.
There are also two candidates for the Committeeperson at large II council seat. Running for that position are Agatha Armstrong and Rob Hull.
