John Beargrease organizers keep close eye on trail conditions, race adjusted to begin in Two Harbors

After a delayed start to the racing season, the John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon will begin on March 2.

With recent temperatures reaching 40 to 50 degrees on Feb. 24, race organizers and volunteers are closely monitoring trail conditions from Duluth to Two Harbors.

The 300-mile John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon typically starts at Billy’s Bar in Duluth and finishes at Mineral Center in Grand Portage.

However, on Feb. 25, John Beargrease organizers announced in a press release due to deteriorating snow conditions surrounding Duluth, the race will now begin at the first checkpoint in Two Harbors. The race will begin at 11:05 a.m. on March 2.

“Weather always plays a role in sled dog racing, and unfortunately, the recent warm temperatures have made conditions at our original start line unsuitable for the race, there is virtually no snow as of right now,” Mike Keyport, the president of the John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon said. “While we’re disappointed to move from our traditional start, we’re grateful for the support of Two Harbors and our dedicated volunteers who make this race possible. Our team has worked hard to ensure the course remains safe and competitive, and we’re looking forward to an exciting race.”
