Northern Minnesota’s mountain bike racing scene expands with the latest addition of the Gunflint Scramble
Over the past few decades, the United States has witnessed a remarkable surge in the popularity and growth of mountain biking. What once started as a niche outdoor activity primarily enjoyed by a dedicated group of enthusiasts has now evolved into a mainstream recreational pursuit.
In 2022, the number of U.S. participants in mountain/non-paved surface biking reached over 8.9 million—a 22% increase in participation from ten years prior in 2012.
In northern Minnesota, the outdoor activities growth has led to the expansion of mountain bike racing events in recent years. From late spring to late fall, the North Shore welcomes events such as the Lutsen 99er, Sawtooth Challenge, Le Grand du Nord, The Fox, The Wolf, and Heck of the North, among many others.
The most recent mountain bike race to join in the fun is the Gunflint Scramble.
“This is our first year,” said Quinn McCloughan, the race organizer. “We thought we’d give it a shot.”
The Gunflint Scramble is a 20-mile race along the cross-country ski trails, snowmobile trails, and forest service roads near the mid-trail of the Gunflint. The race starts and ends at Bearskin Lodge.
“The course is beautiful,” McCloughan said. While the scenery is undoubtedly beautiful, the race delivers “punishing climbs,” according to the event’s website.
The race is limited to 100 participants and will occur on Oct. 7 at 10 a.m.
McCloughan said an aid station will be hosted at Golden Eagle Lodge, where water, snacks, and energy drinks will be available.
