Snow day for local schools and businesses on December 9

Given the winter storm warning effective until noon on Monday, Dec. 9, several local schools have decided to call a snow day.

The winter storm warning calls for an expected 6 to 15 inches in areas of southern Cook and Lake Counties, according to the National Weather Service. Wind gusts may reach as high as 35 mph.

With the expected heavy snow accumulation and predicted dangerous travel conditions, Cook County Schools ISD 166 will be closed on Monday, Dec. 9. Superintendent Chris Lindholm said, “All school activities are canceled and the offices are closed.”

In addition, Great Expectations School will be closed Monday, Dec. 9 due to the weather and road conditions.

As of 8 p.m. according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation, Hwy 61 is slick between Duluth and Two Harbors. Farther up the North Shore to the Canadian Border there is snow on the Hwy. Check the latest road conditions at 511mn.org.

Snow will be heavy at times in far northern Minnesota, particularly the Arrowhead region and along the North Shore, the National Weather Service said.

The majority of the snowfall has arrived as of 6 a.m. on Monday. Initial snowfall totals range from 5 to 8 inches in areas of Cook County, according to reports shared with WTIP.

A few local Cook County businesses are also participating in a snow day and have closed Dec. 9 due to the weather conditions:

  • Angry Trout Cafe is closed Monday, Dec. 9
  • The Fisherman’s Daughter is closed Monday, Dec. 9.
  • The Big Lake is closed Monday, Dec. 9
