World Press Institute brings global journalists to Grand Marais
Journalists from around the globe will arrive in Grand Marais on Sunday afternoon and embark on a multi-day exploration of Cook County.
As part of the visit to Grand Marais, the ten global journalists will take part in a public forum on journalism at the Arrowhead Center for the Arts.
The public roundtable discussion is set for 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 16. The event will feature a question-and-answer session with the ten visiting journalists.
This will be the World Press Institute’s (WPI) 59th annual journalism fellowship program. WPI has invited ten journalists from Brazil, Bulgaria, Finland, India, Italy, Kosovo, Nigeria, Peru, South Africa, and Ukraine to participate in the program this year.
The WPI program runs from Sept. 6 through Nov. 9 this year. The fellows will spend nine weeks exploring the intricacies of the 2024 U.S. Elections, the dynamic intersection of artificial intelligence & journalism, and the rapidly changing digital media landscape, according to WPI officials.
The journalists arrived in the U.S. in the past week and began the fellowship program at the University of St. Thomas in Minneapolis-St. Paul. Following their visit to the Twin Cities, the journalists will travel to Grand Marais and then depart for a nationwide tour.
The journalists will then travel around the U.S. for five weeks, meeting with journalists, policy experts, and political, business, and community leaders. They will visit New York City, Washington D.C., Miami, Phoenix, San Francisco, and Chicago.
WTIP’s Kalli Hawkins spoke with Cesare Treccarichi and Xhemajl Rexha, two 2024 WPI fellows. WTIP also spoke with David McDonald, the executive chair of the WPI Board of Directors.
