Shipping season on Lake Superior rolls toward the finish line

The shipping season ends on Lake Superior in mid-January, though any ocean-bound vessel will be off the Big Lake by the end of the month, according to Jayson Hron, the director of communications and marketing for the Duluth Seaway Port Authority.

During a recent interview with WTIP, Hron said the 2022 shipping season started out slower than the five-year average, but busy months in the fall and early winter have made progress toward a stable season overall.

Iron ore, wind-energy cargo, large industrial pieces of equipment, grain, and many other regional crops were shipped from the Duluth Harbor this year, Hron said.

The shipping season officially ends Jan. 15, 2023, when the Soo Locks close for the season.

Hron spoke with WTIP’s Joe Friedrichs about the 2022 shipping season on Lake Superior. Audio below.
