2025 Memorial Day ceremony at Cook County Courthouse
Veterans and community members gathered at the Cook County Courthouse on Monday, May 26, for the annual Memorial Day ceremony.
The American Legion Post 413 hosted the ceremony, which began with the National Anthem. Post 413 Commander Bob Mattson welcomed the crowd surrounding the Veterans Memorial area of the courthouse lawn and thanked all for coming to honor this special day.
“Memorial Day is an occasion for both grief and celebration, reflecting on the tragic loss of life and recalling the courageousness of military service,” said Commander Mattson in his opening remarks. “For those who have served, today holds utmost significance for giving our country the opportunity to pay tribute and remember the lives that have been lost in defense of our nation.”
Commander Mattson read the names of 19 Cook County veterans who have passed in the last year, ringing a bell after each name.
“When our time comes to its inevitable end, let us be guided by what is noble and worth fighting for,” said Pastor Dale McIntire in the closing prayer. “Let us be less selfish and more selfless. Let us stand for the weak, the oppressed, and the poor. Let us care deeply and genuinely for the grieving and the broken. Let us carry the burden of freedom gladly, as have so many that have come before us.”
