ISD 166 District 5 School Board candidates face off in WTIP forum

Election ballots will be mailed for many Cook County voters on Thursday, Oct. 13. As part of WTIP’s ongoing election coverage for 2022, a live forum took place for the local school board Oct. 12.

The forum featured the two candidates vying for the seat representing District 5 on the Cook County ISD 166 School Board. The candidates are incumbent Dan Shirley from Tofte and Rae Piepho from Lutsen.

The show was moderated by WTIP Reporter Kalli Hawkins.

Topics covered in the forum include the referendum operating levy voters will consider in the upcoming election, teaching American history in the classroom, gender identity, religion in school, teacher license requirements, banning books, and other issues relevant to school boards in Minnesota and across the nation.
