Arrowhead Eagles offering a $2500 aviation scholarship

The Arrowhead Eagles is a non-profit aviation organization formed over five years ago to help engage volunteers and raise money for scholarships for individuals interested in pursuing an aviation career or pilot’s license. 

Since its formation, the organization has given away multiple scholarships and involved a dedicated volunteer group. In 2022, the Arrowhead Eagles awarded a $2,500 scholarship to Amy Kloster as she pursued her private pilot’s license. 

The Arrowhead Eagles are preparing to give away another $2500 scholarship in 2023. Individuals interested in the aviation field, including aspiring airplane or helicopter pilots, air traffic controllers, or aviation maintenance technicians, are encouraged to apply.

“We usually get maybe half a dozen applications,” Mike Raymond, the president of the Arrowhead Eagles, said. “So you’ve got pretty good odds.”

Interested individuals must be at least 15 years of age and live in Lake or Cook County. To apply for the scholarship, Raymond said to “pick up an application at the airport or contact me or Rodney Roy, the airport manager.” 

Applications are due by May 1. The Arrowhead Eagles will announce the scholarship winner at the annual meeting at Skyport Lodge on May 13. 

Raymond said the annual fly-in/drive-in pancake breakfast event is the Arrowhead Eagles’ biggest fundraiser and allows the organization to award a scholarship to an individual interested in aviation. 

The next fly-in/drive-in pancake breakfast will take place on September 16. Raymond said this year will be “a little bigger production, we hope, with a little more history involved.”
