Hikers rescued from 50-foot gorge along Superior Hiking Trail near Schroeder

At approximately 3:27 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 31, the Cook County Sheriff’s Office was notified of two individuals in need of rescue in Schroeder after sliding down a 50-foot gorge near the Superior Hiking Trail.

The two individuals, a 60-year-old male and a 35-year-old male, were hiking along the Superior Hiking Trail north of Schroeder when they slid down an approximately 50-foot gorge. A 60-70-pound dog slid down the gorge with the two individuals.

The Cook County Sheriff’s Office, Cook County Search & Rescue, North Shore Health Ambulance, Tofte First Responders, Cook County Ropes Team, U.S. Forest Service Law Enforcement, and Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Conservation Officers responded to the call and assisted with the search and rescue efforts.

As responders arrived at the scene, one of the individuals made it out of the gorge while the other individual and dog remained at the bottom. There were no reported injuries, and the responders safely rescued the individual.

The dog, a 12-year-old deaf Pitbull named Jojo, is reported missing at this time. Jojo is wearing an orange reflective harness and has a white patch on her chest. If you see Jojo, call the Cook County Sheriff’s Office at 218-387-3030.
