A new stage for local music: The Lofty Gondola brings live performances to Lutsen Mountains

There’s a new music stage in Cook County, sitting atop the Scandinavian Chalet at Lutsen Mountains.

The Lofty Gondola opened its doors at the end of December 2024, and features live music on an intimate stage multiple times a week.

WTIP caught up with local singer-songwriter Barbara Jean Meyers and her partner Mike Lewis, who are performing together every Tuesday through March 2025 in the newly renovated space.

“It’s fun with the stage here,” said Meyers. “I know the snowcat went by during our set. It’s kind of neat because it’s right behind you. So it’s a fun little piece of the character of playing at this place.”

“It’s not a hard place to be,” said Lewis. “I realized when we drove down here  we’re going to get to see that sunset every single time.”

Both Meyers and Lewis used to play on numerous Lutsen stages before the fires at Papa Charlie’s and Lutsen Resort.

“I used to gig a lot in my 20’s and early 30’s up here,” says Meyers. “Everything from Papa Charlie’s to Lutsen Resort, which is sadly no more. So it’s cool that they’re pressing on here despite the tragedy that happened with Papa Charlie’s burning down.”

Meyers and Lewis said they were grateful for the contributions of Jim Vick, the recently retired general manager of the resort, who helped establish the music scene in Lutsen. “There’s been a robust music scene up here, and his legacy continues,” said Meyers. “They’re having locals play, and they’re doing the songwriter night, bringing people in from out of town for that every Wednesday.”
