Split Rock Lighthouse commemorates the 50th anniversary of the sinking of the SS Edmund Fitzgerald
Split Rock Lighthouse and the Minnesota Historical Society will observe the 50th anniversary of the sinking of the SS Edmund Fitzgerald on Monday, Nov. 10 at 4.p.m.
Spit Rock Lighthouse began its annual beacon lighting ceremony in 1985, when then-site-manager Lee Radzak lit the beacon on the 10th anniversary of the sinking. The following year, approximately 10 people joined Lee for the commemoration. The event grew steadily over time and this year’s observance has sold out with over 2000 in-person tickets having been purchased.
With large crowds expected, those who have tickets are strongly encouraged to arrive early. Off-site parking with shuttle service to and from the lighthouse will be available for visitors.
The event will be live streamed at: https://www3.mnhs.org/ed-fitz-50
WTIP’s CJ Heithoff spoke with Split Rock Lighthouse site manager Hayes Scriven about the history of the event and the storm that sank the Edmund Fitzgerald. Listen below.
