Taconite Harbor Redevelopment Project Advisory Committee will present two visions for the future of the site
The public is invited to an open house on Monday, June 15 at the Schroeder Town Hall from 4 to 7 p.m. to review and provide feedback on the Taconite Harbor Redevelopment Project.
For the past six months, 15 Cook County individuals have served on a Taconite Harbor Advisory Committee to help shape the future of the Taconite Harbor site.
Members of the advisory committee that worked on the strategic planning for the project will be in attendance for the Monday open house as well as representatives from Stantec, the engineering and development company that facilitated the process.
The Taconite Harbor site is a 172-acre property in Schroeder that was formerly a coal-fired power plant. It was closed in 2016 and began the decommissioning process in 2023.
In September 2024, the EDA received a $200,000 grant from the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED) to develop a strategic plan for the transition of the Taconite Harbor Energy Center.
The EDA then hired Stantec Consulting Services, a global engineering and architecture consulting firm, in May 2025 to formulate a strategic plan proposal for Taconite Harbor. Stantec will guide the strategic planning process and work with the EDA, local stakeholders, and the Taconite Harbor Advisory Committee.
Following the open house on Monday, Stantec and members of the advisory committee will present to the EDA Board during the Tuesday, June 16 meeting.
