WTIP Announces Leadership Transition

Cook County Community Radio announced today, a transition to new leadership at the station, with Katie Belanger transitioning into the Executive Director role over the next several weeks. Matthew Brown, who has served as Executive Director for nine years, has elected to step down for health reasons, and will remain part of the WTIP family in a new capacity.

Said Board Chair Peter Clissold, “This is a bittersweet day for WTIP as we recognize the many  contributions Matthew has made to strengthen WTIP over the years, while also being excited to see Katie in this expanded, leadership role. Katie has made a positive impact as Development Director at the station during her time with WTIP, and has the full support of the board.”

Matthew has been part of the WTIP family since 1999, was first hired in 2008, and has been the Executive Director since 2018. During Matthew’s tenure, Matthew helped guide the station through the expansion of digital platforms including the current website, video content,  podcasts and the WTIP app, navigated the station through the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as  secured the station’s financial stability despite the elimination of Corporation of Public  Broadcasting support in 2025. Matthew has a legacy of service to listeners and a dedication to the values that make WTIP an important community resource for Cook County and beyond.  Said Brown, “I am proud of what we have accomplished together, and am deeply grateful to our listeners,  members, volunteers, board of directors, staff, and the community.” Brown added, “WTIP  is very important to our community of listeners and I am confident that Katie’s leadership will  help WTIP thrive into the future.”

Katie Belanger brings a broad set of experiences in non-profit development, education, and journalism. She holds an undergraduate degree from the University of Wisconsin and Masters degrees in Education and English Literature from the University of Minnesota and University of  St. Thomas. Katie has been the Development Director at WTIP since 2024. As she transitions into her new role, she will work with the staff, board, volunteers, and supporters to advance the station’s mission and respond to the changing needs of the WTIP audience.

“I am honored to take on this responsibility and excited about the opportunities ahead,” said Belanger. “WTIP is a grass-roots endeavor: volunteer-powered, member-supported, and built on a shared belief in the value of independent, public media. I look forward to working with our community to ensure WTIP continues to thrive.”
