Steger’s Ice Ball sparks stories and celebration on the edge of the BWCA

An annual event on the edge of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness known as the ‘Ice Ball’ is a celebration of all things cold and sustainable in the North Woods.

The celebration takes place each winter at the Steger Wilderness Center, an imaginative setting found just a few miles from Ely. The center is the vision of Will Steger, who is probably best known for his polar expeditions.
