WTIP learns more about explorer and environmentalist Will Steger

Known around the world for his explorations across some of the coldest and most remote pockets of the globe, Will Steger lives in a small off grid cabin that he designed and built near Ely.

Steger grew up in Richfield, Minn., but he always knew he’d make his home in the wilderness. He bought land near Ely when he was just 19.

“When I moved up in this land was raw wilderness, really tough country, you couldn’t even walk through it,” Steger said.

An explorer and environmentalist, Steger has transformed a portion of the land into the Steger Wilderness Center, though it’s also still simply known as “The Homestead.”

WTIP’s Barbara Jean Meyers visited the wilderness center during the winter of 2022 and shares this report. Audio below.
