The Minnesota DNR seeks volunteer instructors in Cook County
From local non-profit organizations to state agencies, volunteers play an integral role in the success and longevity of a community.
Numerous community programs and services would not be available to those in need if it weren’t for the commitment and selfless dedication of members of our community.
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) depends on volunteers for a handful of citizen science and special programs such as zebra mussel monitoring, campground hosts, safety training instructors, and many more.
Minnesota DNR, local Conservation Officer Kylan Hill, reached out to WTIP to raise awareness and provide information for volunteer opportunities here in Cook County.
Hill explains that the DNR is seeking volunteer firearm safety instructors to teach youth and adult classes.
To apply for a hunting license in Minnesota, an individual born after December 31, 1979, must possess a firearm safety certificate. To obtain a firearm safety certificate, an individual must attend a class taught by an instructor who is typically a volunteer.
“It makes a lasting impression,” Hill said. He added, “In fact, when I took all of my certifications, back when I was a youngster, 20 years ago now, I remember which conservation officers provided that instruction.”
Hill said the number of volunteer safety instructors is getting smaller in Cook County. At the last firearm safety class in late May, Hill explained that they conducted the course with the bare minimum number of instructors.
“It’s a neat experience getting to know the kids throughout the county,” Hill said.
In addition to firearm safety instructors, the DNR is also seeking ATV and snowmobile instructors. Individuals interested in volunteering can sign up on the DNR website.
