Blazing Trail Ep. 7 – The Legacy of the Land

Judy Gibbs, co-founder of Hartley Nature Center and SHT trail blazer
In Episode 7 we learn about the early history of the 40 miles of trail that extend through the city of Duluth. Telling that story is Judy Gibbs, a trail blazer, historian and environmental educator who co-founded the Hartley Nature Center in Duluth. Judy explains what the long process of building the trail was like, and shares her personal views on the legacy and added value that publicly-owned and managed forest lands contribute to our urban landscapes.
Then we meet Hansi Johnson from the Minnesota Land Trust, who gives some examples of the Trust’s legacy of protecting public land in Minnesota for the long-term, including a new partnership that’s in the works between the Trust and the SHTA.

We also talk to Brett Feldman, president of the Minnesota Parks and Trails Council, an organization with a long history of helping to secure permanent land protections for public land all across Minnesota, including many well-traveled sections of the SHT. Brett talks about his personal connection to the outdoors–a philosophy and approach he learned from his father, who worked for the Minneapolis Parks and Recreation Board for many years.
