Boundary Waters Podcast Ep. 135 – The Line Between Adventure and Disaster, with writer Frank Bures

The Eliasen brothers from Hovland, Minn. Winners of the Paul Bunyan Canoe Derby in 1940.

In Episode 135 of the WTIP Boundary Waters Podcast we talk to Minnesota author and columnist Frank Bures, author of the book “Pushing the River,” (MNHS Press, 2025). With Frank as our guide, we explore spooky stories from deep in canoe country, including the terrifying tale of Sturgeon Narrows in Quetico Provincial Park. We also hear the story of Frank’s own near-death experience in the cold waters of the Mississippi River, and learn about the legacy of canoe racing in Minnesota, as shaped by the legendary 450-mile Paul Bunyan Canoe Derby, that took place between 1940 and 1960.
