It Happens Here Ep. 19 – Allies
It Happens Here launched in 2022 as a way to explore who we are as a community, and how Cook County fits into the bigger picture when it comes to the problem of racism. Since then we have learned a lot about the diverse history of the North Shore, explored the differences between micro-forms of racism and institutional racism, and worked with historians, scholars, and anti-racism trainers to help us navigate this often difficult and murky terrain.
In Episode 19 we look at how positive change can happen through the hard work of community members who serve as allies alongside people of color. We hear from Grand Portage elder and anti-racism trainer John Morrin, Bois Forte bandmember and diversity trainer Christina Woods, as well as some familiar voices from the WTIP community, who have covered the news and helped steer earlier conversations about racism.
This segment is written and produced by Staci Drouillard and co-hosted by Tyler Howell.
It Happens Here: The Roots of Racism on the North Shore is supported in part by the Minnesota Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.
