Beaver Bay man charged with attempted murder after stabbing his father
A Beaver Bay man is facing second-degree murder and assault charges after allegedly stabbing his father at their family’s Beaver Bay home on Friday, Oct. 2.
Samuel Osborne Stenberg, 21, of Beaver Bay, is charged with felony attempted murder and second degree assault, as well as misdemeanor domestic assault, stemming from the alleged Oct. 2 stabbing, according to a criminal complaint filed in Lake County District Court.
According to the complaint, deputies and other law enforcement officers were dispatched to a home on Evelyn Street in Beaver Bay shortly after 12:30 p.m. on Friday for a reported stabbing. The reporting party told authorities her husband had been stabbed multiple times by their son, Stenberg.
Lake County deputies arrived on scene and entered the residence and found the victim, Stenberg’s father, lying prone in a bedroom and covered in blood. Stenberg’s father was conscious when deputies arrived and had large pools of blood surrounding him. He told authorities that his son had stabbed him nine times.
After arriving on scene, authorities began canvassing the area around the home in search of Stenberg, who was believed to have left the residence. A Minnesota State Patrol Trooper located Stenberg walking nearby and detained him. The complaint states Stenberg had blood covering his hands and dried blood on his face. A small steak knife covered in blood was found in his jacket pocket, and the state trooper also found scissors in his sleeve.
According to the complaint, a Lake County Deputy asked Stenberg what had happened. Stenberg then responded, “I just killed my dad.”
The complaint states Stenberg told investigators he got a small knife from a kitchen drawer and stabbed his father near his bedroom. He said, “I stabbed him probably like, I don’t know, five-seven times maybe.”
The complaint states Stenberg said he believed his father wanted to kill him, which he cited as the reason for the stabbing.
Stenberg’s father told investigators that his son initially punched him before he realized his son had a knife. Stenberg’s father said he then took shelter under his bed, where his son continued stabbing him before leaving the home.
The complaint states Stenberg’s father suffered five stab wounds to his back, a cut earlobe, and a cut approximately two inches long on his head. He was airlifted to Essentia Hospital in Duluth.
The complaint also states Stenberg told investigators he had tried to kill his father the previous night and that his father had then taken Stenberg to Essentia Hospital in Duluth to seek treatment. He said his father picked him up from Essentia Hospital the following morning, on Friday, and drove him back to the Beaver Bay residence. When the father and son arrived back home, Stenberg’s father said he could tell that his son was not “acting like himself,” and shortly after arriving home, the stabbing occurred.
Stenberg had a bail hearing on Tuesday, Oct. 6. His next court hearing is set for Oct. 12.
