Brian Silence recognized by County Board ahead of retirement
After over 20 years working for Cook County, Maintenance Director Brian Silence is preparing to retire. At the Aug. 27 Board of Commissioners meeting, the board recognized his time with the county.
Commissioner Ann Sullivan began her remarks by talking about Silence’s service to the county and the many responsibilities that fall under his department. She then shifted her comments to speak directly to Silence. She said to him, “You’ve been a mentor, a leader and a friend to so many of us, and always ready with a solution to any challenge or any repair for equipment, whether it’s in the middle of the night or on a weekend, and you’ve served with a smile that brightens oftentimes the toughest of days.”
As Silence retires, the county is seeking a replacement to lead the department. Along with the change in leadership will come a change in title for the head of the department. Earlier this summer the board opted to adjust the job of Maintenance Director to Director of Facilities. The new title reflects a change in the range of duties included in the job, according to County Administrator James Joerke. Joerke also previously told WTIP that as the county looks for someone to fill the role, Silence has agreed to remain available to help with the transition and training for a new department leader after his retirement date.
