Construction on Pigeon River bridge will bring delays at the Canadian border on Highway 61

Construction on the Highway 61 Pigeon River bridge in Cook County at the US-Canadian border will begin on Monday, April 10.

Traffic across the bridge will be reduced to a single lane controlled by temporary traffic signals and will remain that way until October, according to officials with the Minnesota Department of Transportation. Intermittent full closures of up to 15 minutes will occur throughout the project duration.

WTIP’s Joe Friedrichs spoke with Margie Nelson, a spokesperson for the Minnesota Department of Transportation who is based in Duluth, about the upcoming project. Audio below.

The major undertaking to repair the bridge that stands over the Pigeon River will include replacement of the bridge bearings, deck, and lighting system. In addition, there will be storm sewer replacement, new approach panels, and abutment work, according to Nelson.
