Cook County celebrates retirement of long-time employees

Two long-time employees of Cook County were honored on Friday, Dec. 5 to mark their retirements. Environmental Health Officer Mitch Everson is leaving the county next week after 15 years in Land Services, and David Eckel has finished his time with the county after 47 years working as a custodian and janitor.

At a retirement party held at the courthouse, both men were honored for their longevity in their respective roles. They were each presented with certificates and a variety of items to mark the occasion.

Stephanie Radloff and Jay DeCoux, representing the Cook County Employees Association, presented Eckel with a “Most Dedicated Employee” award, and he received a printed version of the remarks Commissioner Garry Gamble made upon the announcement of Eckel’s retirement in October. Several members of the public and other county employees, including Facilities Director Brook Lessard, also gave speeches honoring Eckel.

Land Services Director Tim Nelson spoke about Everson’s accomplishments in the department, commending him for improvements he fostered in the area of septic inspections. Nelson also presented him with a golden shovel.

WTIP’s Kirsten Wisniewski spoke with David Eckel ahead of his retirement. Audio of that interview is below.
