Cook County snowfall totals and winter storm cancellations

The brown lawns and landscape of the North Shore are now blanketed with snow.

Many areas across the Northland, including Cook County, are still under a blizzard warning until 7 p.m. on Tuesday. The National Weather Service provided an update at 3 a.m. on March 25 stating that additional snow accumulations will total 9 to 12 inches. Wind gusts may reach 40 mph.

The following snowfall totals and Cook County cancellations are current as of 7 a.m. on March 25.

Snowfall totals for Cook County:

  • WTIP Station – 6 inches
  • County Road 7 – 6-7 inches
  • Good Harbor Hill – 9 inches
  • Lutsen – 5.5 inches
  • Tofte – 8-9 inches
  • Mid-trail of the Gunflint near Poplar Lake – 3.5 inches
  • Seagull Lake – 2.1 inches
  • Reservation River in Grand Portage – 9 to 10 inches
  • Hovland – 7-8 inches

Lake County

  • Finland – 9.4 inches
  • Silver Bay – 7.8 inches

March 25 Update to Burn Permits

Due to the snowfall received across Lake and Cook Counties, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) announced on Monday, March 25, the burning permit status has been changed to ‘Open No Permit Required’.

Aaron Mielke, the Fire Program Forester for the Minnesota DNR said, when the majority of the snow melts permits will be required and burning will again be restricted to occurring after 6 p.m., spring restrictions (very limited burning opportunities) will likely follow soon after.
