Cook County youth mountain bike team wrap up first season
The first-ever youth mountain biking team wrapped up its first fall season in Cook County in October 2024.
Under the leadership of Melissa and Brian Gregg, the team had riders from 6th through 12th grade of various skill levels. The team practiced on the Pincushion Mountain bike trail and in town, focusing on fitness, riding technique, and having fun. To learn more about the team’s inception, check out WTIP’s conversation with Melissa and Brian Gregg in July 2024.
One team rider, Rafe Williams, joined the team with years of mountain biking experience, competed in multiple races, and eventually qualified for State. Another rider, Basil Ferry, started riding only after joining the team this fall. Despite the level of experience, all riders described a love for the sport and a strong camaraderie among the team.
Ferry describes it as, “The culture of mountain biking, from the small bit I’ve seen, is pretty great.”
For some youth, this team has been long anticipated. Team rider Ennis DeCoux shared, “There had been talk about a mountain biking team for a few years, but it was never able to happen until Brian was able to figure it out.”
Coach Brian Gregg shared with WTIP that the team anticipates doubling its size next season and will need more coaches to meet the standards set out by the Minnesota Cycling Association. Female riders are encouraged to join, as well. Furthermore, Brian and Melissa Gregg wish to thank the other coaches who made the season a success and the local businesses and individuals who sponsored the team.
