Culinary arts program at Cook County Schools receives $12,000 donation from friends and family in honor of Tom Hicks

On the afternoon of August 31, family and friends of Tom Hicks, a former Cook County resident and well-known chef who passed away in 2020, gathered in the culinary arts room at Cook County School to pay tribute and give a generous donation.

Hicks served as the chef at Lutsen Resort for 43 years. He also cooked at the American Legion Post 413 in Grand Marais occasionally. In addition to his professional life as a chef, he was frequently involved in community events and enjoyed volunteering his time to meaningful causes.

After Hick’s passing in 2020, friends and family were inspired to create a scholarship in his honor and help further culinary opportunities for an aspiring individual. During the August 31 gathering, Hick’s sisters, Naomi and Sarah, along with family friend Perihan and cousin Chuck presented a plaque and a donation of over $12,000 in honor of his legacy as a chef at Lutsen Resort for 43 years.

The donation will support the culinary arts program at Cook County School and scholarships for students who pursue an education and career in culinary arts.

“I think a lot of kids will be able to take advantage of this,” said Thomas Nalezny, the culinary arts teacher. “It will be nice to be able to offer a scholarship to them.”

Cook County School said it is incredibly grateful for this generous donation and thanks the many, many friends and family members of Tom Hicks who donated to this fund in honor of his legacy.

Following the tribute event, Hick’s sisters said, “It felt good to return to Grand Marais.” They enjoyed driving through town and by Hick’s old driveway and reliving cherished memories with their brother.
