Deadline to file as township candidate is January 11

Each year in March, the three West End townships—Lutsen, Schroeder, and Tofte—hold their annual meetings and elections. However, the filing period for citizens interested in running for township office is months earlier. The deadline to file for township office is January 11.

Each township will have a supervisor and clerk seat on the ballot. The township of Tofte will have an additional spot on the ballot for treasurer, as previous treasurer Dan Shirley resigned in June.

Lutsen candidates
In Lutsen, Supervisor Carl Friesner has announced that he will run for a second term. He was first elected in 2019 to the three-year term. He serves on the Lutsen Town Board with Lollie Cooper and Chris Homyak, along with Treasurer Ashley VanDoren.
According to the Cook County News-Herald, Clerk Sharon Hexum-Platzer is not seeking another term as clerk, but does still want to be involved in town government. She said a Lutsen resident has expressed interest in the position. Hexum-Platzer said she would be willing to serve as deputy clerk to assist her successor.

The Lutsen annual meeting and election will be held at the Lutsen Town Hall at 116 Caribou Trail.

Schroeder candidates
The current supervisor and clerk in Schroeder, Supervisor Tina McKeever and Clerk Anna Green have announced that they will run for re-election. They serve on the current town board with Supervisors Bruce Martinson and Lloyd Chase, along with Treasurer Carla Menssen.

The Schroeder annual meeting will be held at the Schroeder Town Hall at 124 Cramer Road.

Tofte candidates
Current Tofte Supervisor Sarah Somnis has announced that she will run for her third term on the town board. Clerk Kay Spielman is also eligible to run for a second term. They serve on the current board with Craig Horak and Sam Crowley
Tofte is still seeking a citizen to serve as treasurer.

The annual meeting for the Town of Tofte will be held at the Birch Grove Community Center, 9 Good Neighbor Hill.

March annual meeting
All three township election polls will be open on Tuesday, March 11 from 5-8 PM for all registered voters of the township. The annual meeting follows at when the polls close at 8 PM.
