Fatal snowmobile accident on Poplar Lake

The Cook County Sheriff’s Office was notified on Jan. 19 of a snowmobile accident on Poplar Lake, near mid-trail of the Gunflint, where a Grand Marais resident was found deceased.

The individual was identified as Jeffery Knaeble, 38, from Grand Marais.

Another snowmobiler discovered Knaeble on Jan. 19. The Cook County Sheriff’s Office responded to the call. Authorities believe Knaeble hit a rock and was thrown from the snowmobile.

The Cook County Sheriff’s Office said in a press release, “It appeared that the rider had crashed sometime during the previous night.”

The incident is under investigation. No further information is available at this time.
